Sad on so many levels
10 November 2023
I don't see how this film could be much worse, and it saddens me to watch four of the most talented, dynamic, personable female actors of their generation in this cringeworthy mess. Lame jokes about being old, silly and non-romance (I celebrate any well done late-life love story, but come on!), cliche upon cliche and basically phoned-in performances all around. Sorry to be so negative, but these women deserve better, beginning with a better script. I couldn't bear to watch all the way through, so I will hope that somehow I am wrong and just stopped watching too soon. The first Book Club movie was entertaining, and I thought the characters were interesting and funny, but this one left me cold.

Alaska Daily (2022–2023)

Please renew this show!

It is so refreshing to watch a series about news reporting that is low-key, serious and respectful of the profession. Given the constraints of time and storytelling, there may be some scenarios that seem overly simplistic (such as sources giving up sensitive documents or even returning phone calls) but overall it's really well done. The choice of subject matter - the disappearance of indigenous Alaskan women - gave the series tension and gravitas without lurid sensationalism. I was sorry to see it end and was left hoping for more. Some great characters and a really fine cast. Hilary Swank is superb!

Big Stone Gap (2014)

A lovely film!

I don't think I stopped smiling from the first frame until the end, even though a few times I was smiling through tears. Call it a chick flick if you will, but this is a film with great heart and more than a little gravitas. I have enjoyed Adriana Trigiani's novels for years and was pleased to see that Big Stone Gap was to be made into a film. I admit that I was a bit skeptical about the author serving as writer and director, but kudos to her for an outstanding job! The cast is excellent -- Ashley Judd and Patrick Wilson are just right as not-so-young single residents of a small Virginia town where everybody wants to mind their business. The supporting cast includes veteran actors such as Whoopi Goldberg, Jenna Elfman and Judith Ivey, who really pull their weight. It's funny, heartwarming, and absolutely beautiful, shot on location in the real town of Big Stone Gap, Virginia, where Trigiani grew up (and where Patrick Wilson's grandparents lived. Go figure.) No phony Southern accents in this film - They get it right. Thank you!!
