The Longest Straw (2017)
water, water everywhere...
We take for granted that we can walk into the kitchen, turn on the faucet, and have clean drinking water readily available. There have been other documentaries made about where our water comes from, but this focuses specifically on California's 338 mile aqueduct & this filmmaker's and her crew's months-long hike to traverse the whole thing, and the endeavor to educate the viewer. I'll be honest - I never even knew such a thing existed, so this was very interesting to me. It's important information, delivered well, not preachy but informative. I love documentaries as a genre and appreciate when I'm able to learn something new from an impassioned teacher.
Her Composition (2015)
Art is passion, indeed
There is a scene in Purple Rain (all hail the beloved Prince) where he demos music for his love interest, and what he plays sounds like a woman in the throes of ecstasy. He explains that she is crying, and the track is being played in reverse. I thought of that scene with this film. Malorie takes financial matters into her own hands and uses the resulting encounters to further her career. Her artistic choices are... odd, in my opinion, and her resulting work is as well, but it's an interesting journey through the brain of an artist.
Tag Team Truckers (2018)
Brothers, boys, & big rigs...
Mindless, mild, but ultimately so good natured, energetic and fun that it would be hard not to enjoy this little ride for as long as it lasts. This little indie reminded me of The Odd Couple in some ways, though I went back and forth with who "I" might be in the film (I have a brother and he is 100% the opposite of me in every way). The whole thing exudes a reckless sort of panache, an overwhelming confidence and abandon - what's not to like?
Viral Beauty (2018)
Social media at it's worst, but funny and heartwarming all the same
Heartbreaking in so many ways. This film is so timely considering the current climate of influencers and YouTube and Instagram and branding and going viral and and and.... social media can be the worst, and Marsha learns that lesson speedy quick. I'm a little older and wiser than the generation portrayed in this little indie gem, so I get to pass judgement (ha!). It makes me sad that a person's sense of self worth can be so tied to their online presence, or lack thereof.
Casey Killoran was absolutely fantastic as Marsha, I read somewhere that she gained weight to play the character - serious commitment to her role. She was relatable, she was vulnerable, she was a microcosm of so many young women who want the sort of celebrity that she was "given." A romcom that takes only a little time and attention, perfect for the generation that really needs to WATCH this film. Lessons to be learned!
Shady White (2019)
Indie thriller, clever comedy
At just under an hour and a half long, this film draws you in and bolts ahead. I'm a Tarantino fan, and some of the other reviews that compare this to his films are accurate (but without Tarantino's over the top gore, which I appreciate). A classic-but-not-really whodunit, with some really interesting characters & dry humor to keep it light in unexpected ways, with clever dialogue and great casting. Clayton Miller makes a great Shady White! Add to the mix murder, cops, the mob, a love interest, and it's worth a watch.
