Chip Chilla (2023)
I Let the Kids Rate
I let my kids (10.5 & 7) rate Chip Chilla on the 1-10 star scale. They both immediately gave it the highest rating. The show gives a basic introduction to science, literature, and American history. I also like the overall life-lessons taught. My kids giggle through the episodes. It's also nice that the episodes are short. The kids (particularly my first grader) are able to remain engaged with the story, then talk about it and show their comprehension. My little one struggles with expressive language and comprehension, so this has been an exciting find to help her. My older kiddo finds interest in whatever element the show is talking about, then he will look into it further after the episode ends (he had a lot of questions about Moby Dick and The Odyssey). I don't know if Daily Wire has an option to only subscribe to Bent Key, but if they do, I'd say it's worth it regardless of your political beliefs. Kids content should not have focus on political battles, and I am genuinely happy to not have experienced any of that on this show.
Haunted Mansion (2023)
Family-friendly Entertainment
We went into watching this movie with low expectations based on everything Disney has been putting out the last few years. We love the ride, and don't mind the original movie with Eddie Murphy, so we were pleasantly surprised that we enjoyed this new take. My ten-year-old son loves the Hatbox Ghost, so getting an origin story was super exciting for him! My six-year-old daughter also enjoyed the movie, even though a few parts did scare her a little. We loved how much the movie included elements from the ride, and it was fun listening to the kids point them out. If you want to watch something that isn't pushing a political narrative and is purely entertaining, then this movie is a good pick.
Shotgun Wedding (2022)
Lighthearted Fun
This movie is fun and lighthearted. Nothing about the plot is believable, but it is entertaining. It was nice to watch a movie that isn't trying to push some political, moral, or other agenda and is simply providing nonsensical entertainment. It won't be a movie I watch over and over, but it did make me laugh out loud a few times. I like the play on words in the title, too. If you want to watch something while completing a task like cooking or playing games on your phone, this is a good movie for that. You don't have to pay close attention to catch clues or to understand what's going on, you are just lightheartedly entertained.
Disenchanted (2022)
Great ideas, but needed more development to feel complete.
Disenchanted was entertaining and introduced some really great concepts, but failed to develop them. The songs aren't endearing or catchy, which was very disappointing. There were some really great plot ideas, but they never fully developed, which made the movie feel rushed and flat. I think if the focus had remained on Giselle, her family, Edward, and Nancy the movie could have had a more complete and less choppy/hurried tone.
I am happy I watched this movie as it was entertaining, but it won't be one I watch over and over, or probably ever again. My kids (5, 9) enjoyed watching once, but there wasn't anything that really drew them in, so they aren't watching it on repeat on their devices like they do most other Disney movies.
Magic Camp (2020)
Great Family Film
We watched this movie with our kids, who are three and seven. We all really enjoyed the movie and laughed a lot. My seven-year-old was absolutely fascinated with the magic tricks! When he really liked something, he clapped like we were at a live show. It was nice to watch a non-animated, family-friendly, and not too childish movie together. There are adult elements of understanding, but it's not too heavy that the kids lose interest. I recommend this movie to anyone who wants something light, silly, and just entertaining.
The Masked Singer (2019)
Fun, Entertaining, and Family-Friendly
My family and I love watching The Masked Singer! It's nice to have something on TV that is original, fun, and I don't have to worry about what my kids will see if they walk in the room. It has been so fun to see different celebrities unmasked after hearing them sing and watching their performances. Some have been really surprising, and others I pegged from the beginning. Some have even given me a different opinion of them since there is no "I know what you've been like" pre-judgement. I do think the judges are unnecessary, and it gets old hearing them say, "who is that?" and "I know exactly who this is," but since I don't watch live, I just skip over a lot of that. It would be really cool to see some more current popular names, but it makes sense that it's generally those who were big in their time as the current people are busy being...well, current. I look forward to the unmasking each week, and part of me just wants new people each show so we know who they are as soon as it's over!
