The Vanishing (2018)
Gritty and fatalistic take on human greed
I don't understand the poor reviews of The Vanishing. It's a powerful exploration of the corrosive power of greed, and how easy it is to justify your actions, no matter how base and degrading they become. In the vein of Lord of The Flies, this film builds steadily toward it's almost inevitable ending. I thought all the actors in the relatively small cast were top-notch and the sparse dialogue was in keeping with the severe landscape and gloomy weather. I guess a movie without car crashes and explosions is just too boring for some. But The Vanishing doesn't need that to grab your attention and keep it.
Teströl és lélekröl (2017)
Touching film with humor and heart
The story of two reluctant lovers has been told before, but this time the tale has a unique twist involving a possibly psychic connection between two people with physical limitations that put them outside the mainstream of life. There are scenes in the abattoir that may make the squeamish cringe a little, but these scenes also serve as emotional contrast to the struggles of the main characters to express themselves and connect.
Overall the screenplay is excellent and the casting and acting are superb. I found myself really caring about the outcome while also at other times laughing at the absurdity of the human condition.
Código Emperador (2022)
Taut tale of intrigue and deception
This is a very well-crafted story about a shady operative who comes to have doubts about what he is doing. The acting and script are top knotch, and the pace and timing of the plot are measured enough so you can grasp all the complexity of the overlapping storylines while also keeping your attention, not to mention keeping you guessing. The only off note concerns the operation in Panama, which was an unnecessary distraction. Missing are the excessive blood and explosions which seem to be required in all "action" films these days, and that added a star to my rating. A film that does not insult your intelligence.
Sorry to Bother You (2018)
Surprisingly funny and effective
A humorous poke at contemporary labor politics. Most of the plot and the jokes are very predictable, but somehow the cast seems to make more of the script than you'd think. I wonder how many people will catch the reference to MLK being a tool of the establishment, though.
Svart krabba (2022)
Gripping tale to make you think about war
This is an excellent exploration of the moral quandaries involved in modern warfare. Your loyalties are pulled first one way then the other, and ultimately you have to confront the horror of weapons of mass destruction, and what it means to "win" a war. The screenwriting is taut and the acting is first-rate.
Special Correspondents (2016)
Witty satire with a bit of understatement
This film is one of those that sneaks up and catches you unawares with its good-natured humor and sly satirical observations. Not raunchy, no car chases or explosions, just clever adult-themed action, brought home by solid performances from the entire cast. Reminds me of something Peter Sellers might have done.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Just watch the prequel
When I saw that a prequel to this film had been released, I watched it first, just cause I'm a linear kind of person. Boy was I glad I did! The prequel, Army of Thieves, is better than this movie in every way. Better plot, better acting, better cast. Do yourself a favor and watch it and skip this turkey. A rare instance where someone noticed the only interesting thing about this film and developed a better product featuring that character.
