The Stepfather (2009)
Very enjoyable
This isn't an Oscar movie but it is very enjoyable, good pace, great acting. I enjoyed the Melrose Place guy, was really a good fit for the role. In fact the entire cast sat well with this film. It was creepy and engaging, so overall good enough for an afternoon .
Joy (2015)
Knew it was bad from first scene
Regardless the story, this movie has a really strange and un-engaging filming style. The music is too loud and interrupts the dialogue, the camera work is off focus sometimes, dialogue is shallow. It's almost like watching a boring theatre show. On top of all, there is no story. They all live together in that house and Joy is the only one taking care of everything, her ex husband and divorced parents living all together? Go figure. And what year is this supposed to be? Old decor and outfits for no good reason. Overall a real weird one.
Vertigo (1958)
A snooze fest classic...
I really love Hitchcock movies usually, but this could not get my sympathy. While the cinematography and music score is reverting and to par with the expected quality, I found this story to be so flawed that I could not help but rolling my eyes or even laughing. As the story unfolds there are many twists, however they are taking place sometimes in such a fashion and off time that makes the pace very sluggish and the exhausting experience of watching the entire film makes the ending tired on the one hand and rushed on the other, as the resolution is so overdone even when the last scene is wrapped too quickly, making the viewer feeling empty and frustrated.
I will ignore here the fact that this film is so dated that the sexist tropes are laughable and annoying to watch, especially when Scottie orders around the women on the dress and hairstyle for Judy so that she will look like someone else, but it was filmed in a different era after all.
I know many people regard this as a classic that is to be recognized, alas I am not one of them.
The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)
Thriller packed with violence against women
Thankfully they talk alot about things but not showing much of it. Every dude there was a rapist or sexual abuser of women. It is really disgusting. The story was compelling though because of the twists and the mystery of the rich guy. It is full of misogyny and made me feel at some point that the writer in his head just enjoyed thinking about women getting brutalized.
Suits (2011)
I hate all the characters
This show is slick and punching, however as much as I tried, I absolutely dislike pretty much the majority of the cast. I find this show to be admiring and advocating for appalling behavior and characters. I am sorry that I don't think that stabbing in the back, lying and manipulating others are such amazing qualities in people, and it is hard to engage in the professional and personal life of such characters. I do think that some moments in the show were interesting, but overall I cannot stand to continue. Except for that, is can be really boring because I literally could care less about corporate world. Work is work but on my tv it is as boring as it can get. Another shortfall for this "bromance" packed series. They should take notes from The Good Wife on what excellent television looks like.
Extraction (2020)
Loads of shooting weak plot
Ok Netflix, you tried (again and again...). Chris did well in this mediocre movie, but overall after 20 minutes I found myself getting bored. If you enjoy mind-numbing street shooting and no clear or reasonable plot, then you will enjoy this.
Lone Survivor (2013)
Fantastic movie
What this man has been through it is shocking he survived. I feel bad to the families of all the men who died in this operation. And for the village and the man who saved him, I hope he did survive and he should be commemorated for his bravery. This was a very riveting movie.
Dunkirk (2017)
war! what is it good for
This is a very emotionless film. It is constructed on silence and cinematography and lacks a storyline or character building. At some point I started feeling as if I am watching a documentary on WWII... the problem is it was simply boring and not engaging . It relied heavily on sound. At points can be impressive but sometimes just loud and annoying. What can I say? War sucks.
If someone would go to the bathroom and return and ask "what have I missed " during the film, I would say "nothing". You've missed nothing.
Nolan is known to be bad at character writing, his characters are very one dimensional or at least many times it comes off as such, though not everyone will agree with me on this one. People admire his films which lack depth simply because they are confused with grandiose cinematic experience. This is really exceptional though, that he managed to make an entire film without even one substantial character that we care about. I can see what he tried to do here, to create the fear and horrors of the war, what it is actually like. But it is just boring without a background story. Sorry Nolan! Fail!
The Old Guard (2020)
Netflix is counting views over quality
I don't know why they are so proud of how many people WATCHED this at home, which is not surprising since people are home all day now. But what about the actual quality of the movie? Personally I didn't even finish watching this because I didn't enjoy it and it wasn't very good at all. The only good thing going for it is somehow they got Cherliz Therone on it, hooray for them. I am bored with bad quality coming from Netflix. I praised Stateless the other day as a memorable achievement by Netflix, but it is a rare achievement based on the general quality of movies coming from them.
as for the actual movie, as I said, I didn't even finish it. It is really a B rated movie. The script is messy and the acting is only partially good. The story is really just out there... but could work maybe if in the hands of a better production.
Madam Secretary (2014)
Nice but flawed and patronising
The writing of this show is a bit awful. Very slick and patronising. The Americans are portrayed as some voice of reason and everyone else are portrayed as ugly and stupid. I am not even exaggerating. It is so full of cliches it makes me laugh! When I saw Madam's (annoying!) daughter with the Brit guy, I could not relax my laughter. Hear this, her struggle with British culture revolved around TEA! They pour milk first! And the weather! OMG! the writers of the show literally googled England cliches because they know nothing about England. And Israel, Russia, you name it, so full of cliches it makes me roll my eyes.
Thankfully, Tea L is a great actress and she carries the show beautifully.
Tully (2018)
Beautiful film
Really leaves an impact, fantastic acting and the young girl playing her "nursing help" is definitely going somewhere. I would not categorised this as a comedy at all! Nothing funny about the feeling you get when it's over.
Jane the Virgin (2014)
Perfect show
I was actually in tears at the ending! I'm such a sap:)) this show has really got me and my heart! Brilliant writing, brilliant acting, brilliant cast. Thank you for making a wonderful rare piece of history in television.
Can't Cope, Won't Cope (2016)
Loved it!
Living in North UK reminded me alot of that mindset with alcohol (like?) and the culture. It is a very hearty short series and to me was very realistic.
