Aggretsuko (2018)
I binged this in 2 days...
I'm assuming that I binged this in so little time because I was bored and wanted some sort of stimulation, and this is what I got... and it is actually great.
For some reason, I felt embarrassed watching this show, as if I wasn't supposed to be watching it, and I got thinking: why?
Is it cause it's animated? I've had this EXACT same feeling with the Pixar film Elemental.
With that, I found Ember and Wade's relationship to be touching, and that pulled on my heartstrings, despite Wade not being a very interesting character.
I usually think back on the scenes when they are finally able to touch each other. Something about that makes me think a lot.
But enough about that. I'm going to quickly go over each season...
Season 1: 8/10
I'd say every season is on a very consistent wavelength, and are pretty much the same quality. I just enjoy the conflict of this season, and I think I enjoy the simplicity of it, which I feel was missing a bit in seasons 4 and 5, despite those still being of the same quality.
I enjoyed the side character's (mostly. In season 1, not many of the character really connected with me. Not until at least season 2).
Season 2: 8/10
I like season 1 a bit more, but this was pretty much the same quality. The whole thing with Anai was pretty anxiety inducing because it felt like a very real situation.
I will say: with this show, there are a few scene (like 3, I'd say) where there is a legitimate rap battle, and it feels a bit cringe. There is one of those scenes in this season, but it's fine. Just one scene. Retsuko actually falling in love is built up from the first scene of the season, and Tadano was a fun character to watch. I enjoyed their dynamic.
Season 3: 9/10
This was the best season. Why?
It truly showed me that this show can actually be very well written and have very real stakes that involve life and death. The finale of this episode is the only episode that really explores this concept, and I'd say the season 3 finale is the best episode of the show.
I think the K-pop plot with Retsuko works well for her character arc, and also for building her relationship with other characters. Along with bringing her rage to more and more people in society.
Season 4: 8/10
This is the season when Haida starts to become the secondary main character alongside Retsuko, because he finally takes a chance to try to be with Retsuko, and constantly messes it up. However, it works out halfway through the season, and the second half has to do with Haida becoming the new accounting manager, and him and the CEO cooking up an illegal scam to make more money for the business, and Retsuko and others make attempts to stop him.
I'd say I like the first half of the season more, but I still like the second half.
Season 5: 8/10
In this season, Haida is the main character. I think he may actually have more focus than Retsuko does. This was a very interesting change of pace for me, and felt very welcoming. HOWEVER, this was the last season, and the finale... was not series finale material at all. It felt more like a season finale, but nothing else. Ended up being sort of disappointing. The season was still well written. Probably had the second best writing behind season 3. I will say that it definitely gave almost every side character nothing to do, and decided to focus entirely on Haida and Retsuko. This wasn't a bad idea, but as a last season, it was a strange move.
There is something that did bother me in seasons 4 & 5...
I was having a very hard time believing that Retsuko actually liked Haida. She didn't show any signs really at all that she felt the same way about him that he felt about her, and even by the end, I didn't feel it.
Maybe because there wasn't anything physical when it came to people being in love for the entire show. No kissing, but not even smaller physical reactions. Maybe those kind of interactions just feel important to me to show that you love them. I don't know. I wasn't convinced...
-
All in all, I like this show a lot. The artstyle is very cute to me, and all the characters grew on me throughout the show.
A complaint I have is that the show just forgets about Retsuko's mother after season 2. They are only in one episode in season 5, and that's really it.
There really should have been something with them in the finale or something. They were COMPLETELY forgotten in the dust, and it didn't make it feel like it was worth it.
Anyways, I recommend this show for a fun experience with a fun plot and some things that you wouldn't expect going into it.
So, go watch it if you want.
That's all.
Smile (2022)
A hilarious mess
I'll be honest, this movie was pretty fun to watch, but I can't say this movie is good at all just cause it was entertaining. I also don't know if they did what they did on purpose, caul use this movie was hilarious. However, it was funny because of how badly they managed the horror elements. Whenever they smiled in this movie, I couldn't help but laugh, and I did not find this film scary at all. I am honestly REALLY surprised that this has a 7/10?
I would recommend this, just to see how funny it is.
There was a well done Jumpscare at one point, but the rest of them were super cheap and annoying.
So, that's Smile. Pretty much exactly how I expected it.
Du xing yue qiu (2022)
Surprisingly fun to watch
I didn't expect to like this movie, but it was actually very fun to watch.
It felt like it was on the brink of being unfunny, but still remained funny, which is much more than most movies that I've seen this year. This movie also was moving, but it did feel a bit blown out of proportion.
I actually enjoyed all the stuff with Kong, which i expected to be extremely annoying and stupid.
It was just a fun little movie to watch, that may feel extremely long. For some reason, this film felt like it was like 3 hours long, which was fine, since it was an enjoyable experience.
I would give this a 7/10.
Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)
A good experience, but could've been better
I thought I really liked this film at first, but thinking about it, it's good. I do think that around the middle point, it starts to get a little bland, but picks up again around the 4th story.
I expected idris Elba to be bad in this film, but he did a good job, and so did Tilda Swinton. I enjoyed how the middle of the film was basically a bottle episode of a TV Show, with only two characters just talking about their past. I honestly wish they made it less visual and more about their conversation in general.
I think the most rushed part is the main two character's relationship with each other. They are supposed to be in eternal love, but I feel like there wasn't enough development for the two of them to start to bond. I do enjoy the stories that the genie tells, and I think the climax gave a fairly surprising twist, showing that the genie's stories did have meaning.
I do feel like they went for more of a bittersweet ending, but it was just fine. It also seemed quite introspective, which I actually think they did quite well.
I would recommend this movie, because it gives you a unique experience, but parts of the plot feel both rushed and slowed down.
Baburu (2022)
I understand the backlash
So, I haven't watched much anime, so maybe this is pretty weak for anime, but I actually enjoyed this a lot. Even though it is not anything special (at least by its writing), I still found it interesting and fun to watch. Not the mention that the animation was beautiful.
It did feel a bit like those bad modern animes that only exist to sexualize female characters, but it didn't bother me too much.
It was just a fun film to watch, but I understand if you don't like this film.
13 Reasons Why: Tape 7, Side A (2017)
One of the worst things
This episode... did the worst thing I've ever seen anything in media do...
It literally showed a full scene of a teenager slitting their wrists open in a bathtub as she breathes heavily and starts to fade out of existence, and then it shows her parents finding her dead and screaming.
This is scaremongering, but it did the opposite of what it was supposed to do. I believe that this scene is the reason that suicide rates increased when this show was released.
I cannot believe that this episode has over a 9/10.
I know that they removed the scene from the episode, but the damage has already been done. They should've realized what they did wrong BEFORE they got backlash. This episode is outright dangerous, and could ruin your life. Please... don't watch this.
The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) (2011)
This movie?
This movie... well, this movie... yeah. This movie is movie? This movie... you know this movie? This movie. This... movie.
Enough with this movie.
This film might just be the worst thing I've ever seen. Do not watch this film. It is not worth your eyesight. I forever regret watching this film. Please do not make the mistake.
Better Call Saul (2015)
Up There with Breaking Bad
Now that this show is over, I can say that it is amazing. Especially the final season, which was just beautiful, and something so different to everything that I've seen before.
Even though this shows takes a while to get rolling, it is just amazing even in the weaker episodes, since the acting, writing, cinematography, editing, and everything is so perfect.
I think I'd rate the seasons as so from top to bottom:
Season 6
Season 3
Season 5
Season 4
Season 1
Season 2
If you've seen breaking bad, PLEASE give this show a dance. It will astound you.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
The Best Film of 2022
This film... was so different. Not only do I respect the things that they did in this movie, but I loved them. This movie was almost 2 and a half hours, and it did not drag on for one second. This film is an experience that you can't miss.
Everything from the acting to the special effects to the amazing editing, and even the humor was hilarious. The main story was also very sad and made me want to tear up a bit.
I love this film a lot, and shows how different A24 films can be.
Bullet Train (2022)
An Enjoyable Experience
I enjoy this film, but it does have a lot of that cheapness that modern action films have. However, the second act is actually really good and exciting. I wasn't a big fan of the first act, though, and I was mixed on the climax.
The effects in this movie were amazing, probably better than most modern action films lately, and the story was mostly pretty good. I think Brian Tyree Henry was my least favorite part of the film. I found him and his dynamic with Aaron Taylor annoying for a good amount of the film, but it got better in the middle.
This film was very fun to watch, and definitely not boring, but things like Brad Pitt's only lines being one off jokes and jokes that go on for too long bring it down a bit.
Black Swan (2010)
Finally... a great movie!
I feel like I haven't seen a really good movie in a while, but this brought me back up to speed. This just felt so real, but also unreal at the same time since this film made it incredibly difficult to know what was real and what wasn't. Especially the way this film ends makes it an incredible watch. It feels very bittersweet, since Nina manages this amazing performance as the black swan, but also loses her life, proud that she delivered the performance of her dreams. Proud that she transformed into the black swan, even though we know that was not a good decision. The characters definitely feel over exaggerated, which I could understand how it could turn some people off, but j think it worked for this film.
A really great film that makes me want to watch more like this.
The Good Place (2016)
A show with a twist
This show I struggled between giving it a 7/10 or an 8/10. You probably see what I decided to choose, and I want to explain why that is the case.
This show is definitely funny with a good amount of jokes that I found enjoyable, and this show was also one of those shows that I ended up partly binging because of how enjoyable I found it. You get to the end of season 1 and that is when it clicks and makes you want to continue watching. A lot of what this show did was great and the only stuff I had complains about were some episodes, characters, etc.
Brent made me want to die inside, but I did find him more enjoyable. Compared to the gay guy in season 4 (who I forgot the name of), I definitely like Brent more. There are also some episodes where it feels much less smartly written, like the Season 4 episode "Chillaxing" where the message feels very basic and the episode just doesn't feel that interesting. It sounds like I'm pounding season 4, but this season also has two AMAZING episodes. "The Answer" and the Finale. Jesus. These two episodes had the smartest writing in this whole show. Especially the finale, which was the best thing that this show did. Literally one of the best endings I have ever seen.
So, a great comedy show that definitely deserves a lot of praise, and thinking about it now, I don't even know why I considered this show being a 7/10. It's great.
Big Mouth: Ejaculation (2017)
Probably the worst episode of the show
I don't think that they could have made this episode worse if they tried. This episode just doesn't understand that it is super bad. They literally show a 12 year olds p**** in the first 5 minutes. Like holy crap! How can you have so little understanding of what is okay and what's not okay. Jesus. I don't even know what else to say about this episode. Maybe the worst thing I've ever seen. This episode just feels so robotic and not real for some reason. I don't know why.
Big Mouth (2017)
My second review
So, I wrote another review for this show, but I cursed in it and it didn't get published, but I basically said that this is the worst thing I've ever seen and that there are MANY MANY MANY problems with it. I just want to mention a couple things, like how they show a 12 year olds penis in the first 5 minutes, how Nick and Andrew sometimes are some of the worst characters I have ever seen, how insanely bad and ugly the character design is, how unfunny it is, how many times they try to break the 4th wall in an unfunny way, the massive ego this show has, how fake the characters feel, how racist this show is, just EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SHOW!!! It is INSANE how this show has a 99% on rotten tomatoes. The most INSANE thing. Jesus. I would recommend checking this show out just as an example of what NOT to do when making a show, or a movie, or anything.
Just be aware...
Die Hard (1988)
The best action movie I've seen
Now, I am not a big fan of action. Most of the time, there is no plot and no memorable characters or acting with that main character who is completely stonefaced (i.e. Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, etc.) But this film is a breath of fresh air from those films.
Bruce Willis had more character than all of those other characters in action movies combined with human emotions and actual character traits that keep me interested. Bruce Willis in this film is an actual person, not a stonefaced robot that doesn't react to anything.
This film is very entertaining and has good cinematography and sound design. The writing doesn't have a lot that is special, but still feels good and doesn't have many problems.
Except for the crappy ending with the guy coming back to life and giving the cop an excuse to shoot someone again. That was pretty bad. But whatever, it's pretty small.
A great film that I bet most of you have seen by now, but if you haven't, I definitely recommend.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
Absolutely delightful!
This movie feels SO rewatchable and entertaining. When I first saw this, I'm surprised I enjoyed it so much, and I enjoy it just as much with every watch. This movie literally has my humor, and I enjoy it so much.
I would understand if someone didn't like this film because it is both not serious and serious in certain points and some people may feel cluttered by it, but I think it does both of those in great ways. Also the rampant amount of video game references that I really enjoy, but others might think is pandering. I just love this film.
Pig (2021)
How did this work?
So, a film starring Nicholas Cage and Alex Wolff with barely any other characters in the whole film...
How could this work at all?
But. Little did I know... it worked.
This is easily the best role I have seen Alex Wolff in, especially since I do not enjoy him as an actor. Nicholas Cage does play that one quiet character who barely talks, but he actually does show some great acting later on. This film has a very simple story, but it was very enjoyable and despite being so short, it felt like the perfect length.
My only complaint really is that it felt like they had to stretch it out to 1hr 30 min, so they tried to stretch some shots for as long as they could. It only happened a couple of times, but it was quite distracting when a shot went on for way longer than it should've. Other than that, a good film.
The Amazing Bulk (2012)
Please watch this film
This film is like the worst thing I've ever seen but also amazing. I cannot describe the decisions made in this film other than "being lazy." I don't really know what else to say about this, so please just watch it now.
The Boys (2019)
Finally Superheroes are Interesting
This show very accurately shows what superheroes would be like in our modern society. All about social media and the outlook of the hero instead of actually saving people. Despite superheroes not existing, it feels very accurate. I love the characters and actors a lot, especially Homelander played by Anthony Starr, who is my favorite character.
Season 1 is fantastic and season 2 is also great, but not as good.
This show really does feel like one of those shows that everyone should see because of the heavy amount of amazing moments. They also curse a lot. A lot a lot. But I think it works pretty much every time they use a curse word.
The Babadook (2014)
Surprisingly underrated
This movie has a LOT to appreciate about it. This film is basically about a mother and her son getting over the trauma of the car crash of their husband/father. This grief is being controlled through this creature in a children's book called The Babadook. Throughout the movie, it affects the mother more and more until, at some point, it begins to control her and take over her life, killing her dog and attacking her son. Due to her son though, she is able to get it out of her and stand up to The Babadook, forcing it into the basement. At the end of the movie, you see that she is incredibly happy with her son and the she gets a plate of food and brings it to the basement, which has about 4 locks on it. She puts the food down and it is taken away by the Babadook. When s be an talking to it, it tries to attack her, but she is able to comfort it, soothing it and allowing her to go back up to her happy life. This is literally making an unhealthy relationship with yourself into a healthy relationship. At the end, she locks her grief up in a safe space that she rarely visits, and every once in a while, she goes down there to nourish it and comfort that grief, creating a healthy relationship.
This movie is made even better with the performances of Essie David and Noah Wiseman. I'm surprised that I like Noah Wiseman because he is a child actor, who I rarely like, but they did a great job. This movie deserves more praise.
Black Widow (2021)
BORING
This film is B-O-R-I-N-G AF! I barely even remember what happened except for the middle of the film where barely anything happened except for bad comedy between a reconnected family. Really boring and just... a lame Marvel movie.
Halloween Kills (2021)
It isn't very good
Now, I went in to this without good expectations. A film made just for money and to get as many sales as possible. Just like many other horror movie remakes, it was not very successful. I did see the first remake and it was okay. It had some good cinematography, and I enjoyed Jamie Lee Curtis, but that was it for that movie. At least it's more than I can say for this film.
It really felt like nothing happened for this whole film and felt WAY longer than it actually was. With Jamie Lee Curtis having way less of a role than last movie, I really had nothing to look forward to. Also the strange plot that takes place almost entirely in this hospital for some reason and it just felt so boring. Compared to the last film where it felt like a lot of things happened in one night. Talking about it here made me realize that I actually like it less than I thought. You could probably skip this movie in the trilogy of these new Halloween remakes and I bet that you wouldn't miss ANYTHING going from the first remake to the last remake coming out next year. Very boring and corporate.
Eternals (2021)
Marvel's DC Multiverse
This film was not very good for multiple reasons. First of all, I feel like Marvel is just trying to create cash bag money making heroes that aren't original, but ARE gonna sell well. The heroes in this film are literally just Marvel ripping off various heroes from DC and trying to make it their own, but failing.
This film was also incredibly forgettable. I saw it about 4 or 5 days ago and I can barely remember anything that happened. This is due to the forgettability of the plot, characters, questionable special effects, and everything in between.
I did find it entertaining in the beginning because I was expecting a mindless Marvel movie with a ton of action and not much plot, which got me excited because, usually, Marvel movies don't have the best writing. But, after the first couple battles, they stopped the action for a large chunk of the film, putting it to a halt.
I don't hate this film, but I do find it way too long and incredibly forgettable and a film that, in a week from now, I will forget that I ever saw it.
