Deadloch (2023– )

You have to watch this series with the right mindset
6 June 2023
I'm doing this review after the 3rd episode, but I must say I'm looking forward to the rest. I confess watching for Kate Box, who, in my opinion, is one of those rare actresses who always plays her roles perfectly. I'd also recommend Wentworth (even if she only comes towards the end, as the whole series is a masterpiece) and Rake. From the reviews, I understand that it's not for everyone. The most important thing for this series is to take it for what it is: a comedy. I made the mistake, it seems like many others, of believing it was a drama with comic elements, and I have to say that the first few minutes consisted of arduous viewing. It was only after the sequence of police cars dramatically heading in one direction before turning around to continue their journey just as dramatically, that I changed my view of the series. Indeed, the characters are practically all caricatures: the wife of the main character, usually a man but still, who is bored to death and spends her time worrying about whether her wife has eaten properly; the teenagers who wander around finding all sorts of corpses and clues; the coroner and his music that tires everyone; the younger polices who can't tell their left from their right, and so on. In short, Deadloch pokes fun at the clichés of police intrigues- because is it really true that only women poison...? - and serves us a humorous series in which we can still look for a culprit.

He did make it right...
21 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is the second-best episode of my favorite TV show after "The Scandal of Altruism" (4x06). The main action happens at the military base, but we must still mention the iconic Hendrix dance and the fact that Delphine does everything to help Cosima and her sisters when the latter does not seem to notice. The exchange between Felix and Rachel always gives me goosebumps since it's so rare that we see Felix angry and Rachel helpless. Also interesting is that Rachel seems to know the code, as if Ethan was forcing her to work with his sisters even after his death. Finally, the death of Paul surprises, saddens and above all makes us realize that he was a character we loved even if sometimes we forget that. Sarah's hallucinations, which could have been corny but aren't, along with Yuile's soundtrack and crescendo of action make for the perfect ending. Seeing Beth again reminds us that even if their lives are completely different, all the clones are sisters whose destinies are intertwined. The « It was never Beth I loved » is a heartbreaking declaration of love that shows Paul was one of the good guys just not a monitor attributed to the right clone.

The episode where the third season begins to really deliver
21 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A very good episode which proves, in my opinion, that the series does not run out of steam after three years. Cosima's date is closely watched and all I want is for Delphine to get back to her, while Gracie detaches herself from her life before by donning Sarah's clothes and tasting alcohol. As for the situation of the twins, Helena's answers to her sister's questions are hilarious, but this light tone does not last since the Ukrainian ends up abandoning Sarah, while the latter has done everything to come to help her. Other people have compared this episode to a video game, and it is true that Helena's escape in particular reminds one of that. It looks like Paul is starting to have second thoughts about the treatment the Castors are going through, which will be of great importance in the next grand episode like the fact that the party at Ms. S's and Art's encounter hints that the male clones are transmitting a STD.

Feeling a sort of connection with their new brothers
20 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As Mark yo-yos between life and death, Sarah and him finally access the biological material that they need, but as usual Rudy ruins everything. I wasn't sure I liked Gracie, but she's a very interesting character because of her age, her family, and her doubts about her own values. Helena, with her slightly achy scorpion, doesn't give up and shows creativity by turning a bone into a key, but would rather end a Castor's pain than escape. To Paul's dismay and to Virginia's joy, who sees a sort of gift in this, it is Sarah who goes to prison instead of Helena leaving it. The two sisters, neither of whom are known for their calmness, will bring some action in the camp during the next two episodes.

The clone family is still growing
14 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The episode begins with some very applied biology as Cosima and Scott retrieve Seth's brain. It is also the return of Art who, by sending his love for Beth, decides to really get involved in the stories of Sarah and her sisters. Mark is the only male clone who seems okay, but the end of the episode doesn't bode well for him. Two details that I liked are the fact that Delphine makes Rachel disappear with the same plane crash excuse as Leekie and Alison's famous "Go sell a house Marci". The revelation that the Castors and Leda are siblings promises to spice things up. And even if the storylines seem a bit disjointed at the moment, I assure you that their implementation will pay off in the second half of the season.

The male clones are sick too
14 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As is often the case with a second season episode, this one is a bit slower and contains less action. It is now clearly understood that the Castor clones are the center of attention, that they too are sick (less of the lungs, but rather of the brain) and that the sisters will do anything to understand their motives and stop them. The Hendrix seem to think that after the murders, nothing can stop them and here they are, embarking on the drug trade. The scene at Felix's is stressful and causes Sarah to agree with Ms. S's idea of getting Kira to safety while her mother eliminates the dangers hanging over them..

It's time to play your sister
14 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A very good return and for the viewers who hesitate to continue, this is not the time to stop since the best is yet to come even if the tone of the series changes a little bit with this third season. I love the first scene where we see how Helena over-perceives her sisters' (and Felix's) characteristics almost to the point of caricature. We quickly understand that a season full of action awaits her. A difficult season also for Cosima who will not have the support of Delphine to fight her disease and for Sarah who will have to deal with the Castor clones. All it took to dismiss Rachel was a pencil, but she's still a most complex character and it's hard to be happy about her misfortune. Again, Maslany dazzles us and shows that after 3 years she perfectly masters her characters to the point of knowing which clones can play with such level of ease another clone. So, we have a Sarah who confidently, but more or less accurately, inhabits Rachel's white clothes, while a stressed Alison tries somehow to play the insolent rebel. Undercover work is stressful, but allows Sarah to learn more, faster. Also worth mentioning is Krystal's first appearance, but luckily not the last.

A mix of good and bad
14 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This series is difficult to review since some elements are excellent while others are very bad, hence the 7/10.

To start with the bad:
  • The acting will certainly not amaze you and unfortunately especially from the actor playing the main character.

  • The dialogues are sometimes too long and brings nothing to the story.

  • Many situations are not believable at all (especially a battle scene from season 2), but this problem is however solved by the conclusion of this second season.

  • Finally, there are some lengths, but nothing insurmountable.

For the good:
  • The musical score is great and fits the action even if it's a little bit repetitive.

  • The landscapes are magnificent, and we don't have the impression of seeing a badly animated green screen...
  • The character of Chishiya.

  • This tv show manages to make us experience emotions, including shock and stress, which, in itself, is an accomplishment.

  • Several interesting philosophical questions are addressed, albeit often in an questionable way.

  • However, the greatest asset remains the games, due to their complexity and originality.

In short, the question remains is the series worth watching? And for me the answer is yes, because I had a good time just to imagine what strategies I would have choose in each game.

One of the key episodes of the series
8 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
For me, it's one of the strongest episodes of Orphan Black because of the number of revelations and the dancing scene which is a technical and acting feat. We never really know what Ms. S is thinking, we still don't know how Cal will fit in the story, Alison and Donnie are still the funniest couple, and Cosima's condition doesn't improve. Helena finally meets her other sisters even if it's a brief break for her. My favorite scenes from the episode are the touching death of Duncan, the book revelation, and the dance party. Orphan Black knows how to end seasons by giving explanations and asking new questions that are just as interesting as the ones just answered like the Castor and the new younger clone, Charlotte. And now, it's time for the two best seasons, namely the third with its comical and touching moments and the fourth which dives back into Beth's life in a wonderful way and for which Maslany got a well-deserved Emmy.

The Woman in White
11 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
For me, it's a good first episode, although far from the masterpieces that follow, but I see, reading the other reviews that Sense8 is not a tv show for everyone. Rewatching the series, we see that the characters are connected first to those who will be closest to them later, which is an interesting detail.

This series is in my top 10 and it's not like any others, it's the only one that makes me feel good about being human. It is less television than an experience that allows me to travel. The way it is filmed, the music and the life lessons give a special touch to Sense8. Even if the pace can sometimes seem slow, this is necessary to fully understand the dense story. Yes, the plot is sometimes confusing, but that is part of the fun. It is impossible not to recognize yourself in at least one of the sensates and I am not embarrassed to call this series a masterpiece. I invite you to continue if you were intrigued by this strange first chapter.

Favorite character : Will Gorski Favourite scene : When we first saw the eight sensates through the eyes of Angelica.

What to do when the best series ends
28 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I wish I had a good answer, but the fact remains that my second favorite series of all time just ended. The only solution I've found so far is to rewatch it. Overall, I liked the ending even though it was a bit rushed, it could have easily been 1h30. In retrospect, we have to admit that they managed to surprise us again for the last time. We thought we were going to lose many of the characters we love, but only a few of the villains have died. Throughout the series, we were surprised that the best main characters left us suddenly and now that we were prepared with the bomb, they were spared. I liked that the endings of the characters fit their personalities (Ferguson's mystery, Allie's perseverance, Vera's tenacity, Rita's strength, etc.). I know many of us would have liked a jump to the future, but I think this ending is a way of giving us the freedom to choose the future of these characters that we have loved so much and seen grow. I am more than happy to have stumbled upon this television gem and will enjoy watching it all again soon as I rediscover Bea Smith when she arrives in prison...

A captivating penultimate episode
23 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
All the stories of each clone continue to move forward at a good pace. Alison uses her DIY skills to deal with Leekie's situation, Cosima's health is more fragile than ever, Sarah is caught between her sister and her daughter, while Rachel still plots. Helena has had enough of the Proletheans and they end up going up in smoke. Now that Donnie is in the game, the Hendrix couple are stronger (and funnier) than ever. The scene where Kira agrees to help Cosima is really touching, and I also love the moment when Delphine reassures Sarah about her skills as a mother and sister. Stressful end of episode, Delphine does everything to help, but it never seems to work. I find it good that Maslany's acting double, Kathryn Alexandre, has a role, even if it is to play a character that is not very present and detestable (Alexis).

"At the end, she made good"
19 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
After 2 seasons of wondering if Marie had really changed, I finally got my answer. I enjoyed the last conversation between Marie and Allie, even though it looked like a last conversation and I find Ruby stupid for falling into Lou's trap without taking a knife or something. The creators are amazing at making us like characters we hated at first (Kaz and Marie in my case). It's the first episode I don't like Lou and Linda's Game of Thrones commentary really pissed me off. I've spent my time saying that all the cast is great, but Susie Porter still deserves a mention for Winter. Ferguson will surprise until the end, but what is certain is that she didn't do it out of sudden remorse. The placebos reveal is interesting, but The Freak clearly went back to jail to sort things out, meaning killing the ones she thinks deserve it. The end of the episode is special; the whole prison is against the characters we love. Next week is our last chance to be spoiled by an appearance from Bea or a visit from Franky, but mostly the last time to be surprised, moved, stressed and happy because of an episode of Wentworth.

The cat is out of the bag
13 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Vera and Ferguson are nearing the end of their constant 8-year game, as Boomer is finally pregnant, but it looks like Gavin won't be around much. Ann is completely mad, and I don't understand why Vera was apologizing. I liked the moment when Marie understands that Lou has the recording since we see that she is really allied with the girls of H1. Rita's job is finally revealed, and it promises to be difficult for her and her sister. Not the best episode of the season, but I like that I have no idea how the series is going to end.

The Set Up
6 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Wow ... not a dull moment. It feels like the end is coming, it's exciting but sad, all plans are in motion and I don't think we will have time to blink for the last three episodes. Rita and Marie make me laugh, forcing to be allies but still insulting each other every time they see each other, while Allie breaks my heart. Dr. Miller deserves to feel stuck, but the fact that he stands up for Allie and says that Jackson and Bennett are the monsters for putting the young woman in this position is gut-wrenching. It's over for Lou, she will never trust anyone in her life again and now she has the whole prison against her. I definitely believe that Ann's knowledge of the threats is not going to stop the explosion. We're heading towards Rita vs. Lou vs. Ferguson and it can't get more exciting! It's so well written and well played by the actors, I think we're all starting to dread the moment when it will be over.

Kath Maxwell is truly gone
30 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I have to say that since we learned that Ferguson was not dead, I thought it was a good idea to bring back the best villain of the series, but in the end, I was wrong since her storyline is really disappointing in my opinion. They are trying too hard to use her terrifying effect from the early seasons without success. Even though Judy rarely appears in the episode, she is still tiring, and it seems to me that she must know that Kelly will get rid of her when the bomb is ready. I wasn't sure if Jake was going to survive, but now I think the fact that he had relations with Eve and Ann will be revealed soon. Marie clearly uses Lou and plans something bigger keeping the information on Rita. Slightly disappointed with the episode, especially since there aren't many left, but I liked the scene where Lou rehearses, with her modifications, what Judy tells him to tell the man who will make the bomb. Certainly, many deaths to come...

Ethan maybe too late to save them all
26 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I totally agree for increasing trans visibility in the media, but I have to say that, personally, Orphan Black has not done a very good job. The fact that Tony's character is played by Maslany didn't convince me. Examples like Reb (Wentworth), Nomi (Sense8) and Sophia (Oitnb) to name a few are a better representation to me, but the episode is still interesting. With Leekie's death, Rachel's rise to power is worrying. The reconciliation between Delphine and Cosima, the latter's confession to Scott and her meeting with her maker are touching moments before the abrupt end. With this episode, we also understand the importance of Rachel jealousy of Sarah's ability to have children. The Hendrix couple are still having fun with the trail of corpses they leave behind and Ethan seems to have left Kira with the scientific key.

Stabbing in the showers, part 2
23 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode feels to me like a weird dream, but I liked it. Ann has really lost her mind and it was courageous of Allie to confront her crazy attacker. It was well thought out by Rita to let the women in the prison decide the consequences for Judy, even if it ended in an unexpected way, to say the least. Lou is the Top Dogest Top Dog of the show, if that makes any sense, clearly my favorite character of the season (and the eighth). Like everyone else, I really didn't feel sorry for Judy in the water, and I wish she hadn't survived. It will be weird for my favorite character to join forces with the one I hate. Dr. Miller needs to be discovered, and Ferguson and Wilder's shenanigans are equally disturbing. There were several small scenes that I liked: the look at the beginning between Allie and Lou, Ferguson who watches the couple she's built still quarrel, Lou and her gladiatorial leader ways during the torture of Bryant, Boomer who tries seducing Miller as Vera photographs his papers, Allie telling Marie the culprit showing that she knows Winter shares secrets and the list goes on. In short, an explosive last half-season is ahead ...

Finally, she knows
16 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Even though this is an episode that doesn't expand on a lot, it was nice to see more of Allie. I believe we were all hoping that she was going to hallucinate Bea, but I believe, well I hope, that will come later in a more meaningful scene. I hope Vera doesn't cover Dr. Miller and Ferguson seems to have big plans for Eve. I don't think it will last, but I like the relationship between Marie and Lou. However, I don't think the anger of the Top Dog has given way to sadness. Reb's mother's letter only fuels Kelly's already high anger. In short, at least in this episode Allie learns that her fake girlfriend is a real enemy. Let's hope that Bryant will pay full price for her actions.

And once again, a new Top Dog
8 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
First episode of the season without death in the prison, but it still had a lot of action. I don't have good reasons, but Lou has become my favorite character and the show's creators really know how to make us look forward to the fight between Kelly and Connors. Since the fight between Franky and Bea in season 2, all the duels in the laundry room are a bit boring especially since it seemed obvious to me that nothing serious would happen to neither of them. Ann is still planning shenanigans, while Judy gets more and more annoying as she gets Allie to pretend to be with her. However, I am sure that the authors will not disappoint for the story of Novak. She is still one of the important prisoners in the history of the show and it would be a shame if she was fooled all season by the tiring English woman. Dr. Miller is at risk of being discovered with the drug test and Mr. Stewart isn't for long according to Ferguson's gaze. I'm really happy that Rita is back, and I find it interesting to see the difference between Lou's days and nights interesting, but her threat to the whole prison promises to be intense.

An emotionally charged episode
1 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
As we suspected the pace of this last season will not slow down and that is a good thing (especially after a slightly slow season 8). Although I liked the intensity of the episode, certain elements appealed to me less. The death of Ruby and Rita's father took up such a large part of the first two episodes to the point where I expected a reveal, but the good news is that the former cop will eventually return to Wentworth. Boomer was supposed to be the humorous part of the episode, but her interactions with Gavin didn't interest me nor made me smile. Allie's situation is still depressing, and I sincerely hope that she already remembers that Judy is the one who attacked her, thus planning her revenge. The relationship between Ferguson and Vera is increasingly strange (the phone number Joan remembered last season, the fact that she was not pictured killing Vera in the first episode as Jake and Will and now his desire to create a human relationship with her). I like to speculate, but I have to say that Kate / Joan's situation puzzles me, and I don't know where the writers are headed, but... it's Wentworth so I trust them. Finally, the episode is mostly about Lou's reaction to the death of her soulmate and it's as heartbreaking as you'd imagine. I don't know exactly why, but Kelly is one of my favorite character on the show and although I'm sad not to see Reb anymore, Sheila's death doesn't strike me as a great loss. Marie is clearly overwhelmed by events and I am sure Lou will not be content with one death and will not forget the role Winter played in Reb's death. What is certain is that Top Dog Lou Kelly will be way more intense than Boomer.

Here we go
25 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It's with mixed feelings that we begin this last season, both happy to see the outcome, but disappointed to have to say goodbye to a series that made us experience so much emotion. Joan's visions portend a bleak future for the three officers, and it seems unlikely that they will all survive until the tenth episode. Dr. Miller's story takes a strange turn. I understand that he doesn't want others to learn about his mistake, but it seems a little extreme to me trying to regulate the urges of a psychopath. I have to say it feels good to see Judy less, but the fact remains that I can't wait for her to pay and Allie to remember the real culprit. Speaking of Novak, her scenes are painful to watch, as the dramas in her life keep piling up. I love Boomer, but the Top Dog leadership has plummeted since Bea. Despite the spoilers leaked before the episode and my knowledge of Reb's death, it still moved me. I loved the couple Lou and Reb were, but I understand that his death was necessary so that we could see all of Kelly's anger and strength. Marie underestimated Sheila since the latter understands that Reb's death is more painful for Lou than anything else. I can't wait to see Kate Box's acting in future episodes. I also liked the scene where Marie leans on Ferguson as Sheila signals her that the murder has been committed, as if we are being shown that Marie is joining the psychopath's side.

The clueless monitor
8 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Although this is not a comedy series, we must admit that comic situations are perfect; Vic's mittens, his reaction to Alison's confession and his ride on Felix's back are proof of that. The character of Paul is much less interesting since he is Rachel's puppet and the moment when Kira donates her tooth for her aunt is very touching. I just like the scene where Sarah asks « I'm being Alison being Donnie? » because it represents the whole series so well. All the characters have their moment in the episode, but I have to say that it's Donnie who surprises the most by becoming, like his wife, a killer despite his will. The future for the Hendrix family will surely take an interesting turn...

Meeting the creator
1 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It's really good to see the clones see each other more and more as sisters as shown by the twin's road trip and the call between Sarah and Cosima. Scott is a good addition to the team of scientists and his discovery regarding the cure promises to be important for the future. Vic and Alison are reunited under funny circumstances and become oddly friends, but that would have been too good to be true as we learn the dealer 's true motives. Sarah and Helena's journey does not end without hooks, however, as they are followed by Paul and the Proletheans. Helena therefore unfortunately returns to the farm, while Sarah meets the man behind this whole cloning affair. Ms. S always knows more than she says but seems to remain on the good side. And finally, we believed that Leekie was the lesser evil, but it seems Neolution is at the root of the problem. Ethan's "little girls" are dying and it seems like he's the one who can save them.

Forced to choose a side
25 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
One of the strengths of the show is that, in my opinion, all the clones are relevant. The creators didn't settle for just a few to make it easier for Maslany, but they didn't go overboard by creating too many of them either. So even though Rachel is loathsome I find her a great addition. The more we learn about the Proletheans, the more they disturb us, while the bond between Sarah and Helena surprises everyone. Paul is still stuck between Neolution and Sarah and he has no choice but to choose a side. Leekie proves he's more human than Rachel; the lesser evil, which gives my favorite clone a chance. We start to learn about the fire and a road trip is announced for the next episode.
