The Fugitives (1986)
10/10
Classic Comedy
3 June 2001
Pierre Richard and Gerard Depardieu reteam to star in this dynamite comedy about an ex-con (Depardieu) who has just been released from the slammer when he is taken hostage by bumbling robber (Richard) during a moronic bank heist which the robber hopes will help find a cure for his daughter who hasn't spoken since her mother died, three years ago. When the plug is pulled on Richard's bank heist, the police are summoned and Depardieu, out of the many hostages in the bank at the time, is selected to be the robber's ticket out without a shot being fired, but then, of course, the cops think Depardieu is pulling the heist and the two become fugitives. There is only one way out of this fine mess: cross the border, which is exactly what they do in what is potentially the funniest scene in film history. The two men pose as husband and wife (Richard wears a wig, of course), and his daughter's hair is cut and she poses as the son, but crossing the border isn't as easy as it was originally made out to be. Richard's daughter thinks she is going to vomit and Richard shows her how, by sticking his head out the window, thus losing the wig, which is flattened by a passing truck. Everything is back to normal after having retrieved the wig, but Richard is then mistaken for a pregnant woman and is rushed to hospital by roadblocking police. All fits in nicely in what is a modern comic gem.

The Wind in the Willows (I) (1983 TV Movie)

Legendary
10 May 2001
There is only one word for this movie: legendary! The entire cast plays their parts to perfection, especially David Jason as Toad, but overall, the whole cast of talented actors who have ideally lent their voices to this production deserve praise. They've done themselves well.

Chocolat (2000)

Unique
7 May 2001
Another unique period piece from masterful director, Lasse Holstrom, Chocolat is indeed onje of a kind. Holstrom blends equal amounts of comedy and drama with amazing skill and an international cast to match. But all this could not have been made possible if it wasn't for the screenwriters, who have really excelled themselves on this one! A classic! A must see for everyone who'd rather watch the smart little movie than the big violent piece of garbage that has no particular storyline.

The Dish (2000)

Wonderful
7 May 2001
The Dish is a wonderful film from the creators of The Castle and television shows such as The Panel, for Australian TV. The film starts off fairly hilariously, but kind of changes to drama half way through when gale force winds strike up or when they lose Apollo 11 in a blackout, with just a sprinkling of humour, but that full spirited hilarity returns for the finale. A truly wonderful film from that hum-dinger of a country we call Australia!

A classic of the campy genre
29 April 2001
The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Even the name is right. I first saw this film early in 2000 and have seen it somewhere between 50 & 100 times since. It is a classic homage to the midnight horror feature which in its own right deserves every bit of the cult following that it has now picked up. A must see for all fans of the genre.

Superb
29 April 2001
Some say this is the greatest comedy ever made, and I would have to say I agree with them. What is missing from today's comedies is genuine slap stick and actually funny gags. While today's modern toilet humour goes down well with a certain percentage of cinema audiences, it generally goes amiss with cinema critics, making the film a box office bomb for anyone who actually listens to critics, but I find it hard that anyone could criticise this genuinely fantastic film.
