Le passager (2014)
Ridiculously bad
Awful on every level; story line, dialogue, acting, casting....
Gran Hotel (2011)
Very entertaining
A cross between Downtown Abbey and Pierrot. Very entertaining and addictive in spite of ridiculous murder plots. Great acting made it compelling. Loved it from an entertainment point of view. The relationship between Ayala and Hernando was genuinely funny. Great costumes, design, setting... all very eye catching.
Undercover (2019)
Boring
Season 2 is just as tiresome as season 1. It is allegedly inspired by true events but I think more could have been done to make it compelling. Tom Waes is irritating to watch. I thought season 2 would be more interesting with De Rooij (Anna Drijver) removed, as her acting was equally as irritating. Perhaps it is poor directing or poor script, or something, but I am struggling to get through it.
Sacred Games (2018)
Intriguing
Compelling viewing even though some scenes are graphically violent and too prolonged at times. Great plot, great cast. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is riveting to watch as an actor. Dialogue is thought provoking and plausible. Locations and scene settings are equally thought provoking and authentic with attention to detail. I would have preferred to watch it when 3 seasons were available instead of having to wait a year or more for the conclusion of season 2. It was so tense towards the end I was tempted to fast forward it, then disappointed such tension had no relief at the end. But I guess there is only one conclusion possible.
L'amica geniale (2018)
Highly affecting
Exquisite on all levels. A Masterful portrayal of two women, both outsiders from an early age to the environment in which they were born. In spite of having very different personalities, both reflected deeply on the mores of their community, rejecting them in their own way within the restraints imposed upon each by family. Themes of Love, infatuation and their consequences were sensitively and realistically conveyed. Other themes such as nature v's nurture, the lack of opportunities for women in the 50's, verbal and physical abuse within family units were balanced by poignantly beautiful moments. All aspects of these girl's lives were woven seamlessly to portray the beauty, sadness, madness and elation that emerged from their having to make different choices ( by virtue of their personalities) to those of their peers during that era. The directing, acting, scenery and recreation of the 50's in Naples was faultless in my eyes. The music score was moving and when accompanied by photographs at the start of each episode, depicting various scenes from the girls lives , it caused my heart to break with nostalgia... for them.
The Honourable Woman (2014)
Outstanding
I have only just seen this and consider it one of the best dramas ever, on all levels; writing, directing, acting. Gyllenhaal's acting was outstanding. I do not consider this mini-series revealing or educational regarding Israeli/Palestinian relations. There are more informative shows/documentaries out there. And it is a work of fiction after-all. I am a fan of slow-burners and complicated plots, so did not find it tedious at any stage. I liked Nessa's character; her vulnerability, fragility, naivety, contrasting with her idealistic principles, strength and courage in the face of adversity. Yes she was wealthy and lived a privileged life. Materialistic comforts meant little to her as the horror and sadness of having witnessed the brutal death of her father at a young age, is all pervasive. The deliberate depiction of superiority is explored well in the series through her dialogue with the Palestinian characters who hate her for it. I Love Hugo Blick's dark humour which highlights the absurd in even the most grotesque situations. The fact he can cause the viewer to laugh while experiencing discomfort during a scene, is genius.
The Gulf (2019)
Disappointing
Having read some reviews here I was disappointed at how bad this show is. The actors, especially the lead, Kate Elliot, are irritating and unconvincing in their roles. The script, plot, directing, acting. ... all appalling. The depth at which 'characters' are explored is non existent. Perhaps I found this extra unbearable because I just finished watching 'Justified'. The scenery was nice, but again so much was implausible regarding the kind of houses people lived in - irritating all round.
