Les misérables (1934)
THE BEST EVER, A PERFECT FILM!
This film is, beyond any comparison, the most perfect version of Victor Hugo's timeless classic - BAR NONE! I've only seen this version once at a UCLA French film retrospective, but I was absolutely floored. If you ever get a chance to see this movie, do not miss it! Harry Baur's performance as Jean Valjean is magnificent. I'd love to see this one again. I wish it was available in any form DVD, VHS ... anything.
Paper Mask (1990)
Very scary and disturbing!
WARNING, SPOILERS ! I saw this film when it was first released and it is truly memorable and quite suspenseful as well as disturbing. A large part of what hooked me was the fact that the subject matter is not far removed from real-life news stories that continue to appear every year on television and in newspapers. The performances of both Paul McGann and Amanda Donohoe are subtle and engaging. Also, as in certain Hitchcock films, there are moments when the viewer is pulled into siding with a character who's obviously a sociopath.
