Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)
Great design, weak story
The period details are beautiful and it has great cinematography/ production design - rich, vibrant colour palette and real attention to detail. The kids' performances are good although the two most interesting characters disappear before the end. But the story is pretty meh. Probably great fun for early teens, which is its key audience. Maybe okay for grown ups who want a popcorn flick in the background.
Butt Boy (2019)
I wanted to like it more than I did
Some good acting, enjoyably absurd, truly impressive cinematography for something with this low a budget, and some occasional good moments, although mostly before the credits start (quite late).
But it's so very very slow, and padded, I was praying for death. It just goes on, and on, and on....
So, you know, props for how beautifully made it is, and the fact that it was made at all. But Lordy it was a long slog.
Little Joe (2019)
Brecht remakes Invasion of the Bodysnatchers
And yet it's nowhere near as interesting as that sounds. The delivery of the whole thing with anti-depressant style flat-affect is clearly thematically relevant, yes. But that doesn't make it any more interesting to watch the same old cliches of a thousand more enjoyable Hollywood movies being rehashed. The mannered arthouse setting and values could have brought a new perspective, but the script is just as lacking as in any 50s Hollywood B movie. Some good performances by the two leads, albeit working with leaden material.
