Trolls Band Together (2023)
An "artificial" musical
I not use to watch these kind of films but for a family's weekend I gave it a try. Is sad how this movie tries so hard to gets children attention with popular songs. Even "Sing" managed to use the songs as an extension of characters behavior and personality. Nevertheless, "Trolls 3" uses music on random moments for no reason and is more like a YouTube Kids video than a movie.
That's for the worlds building to. The villains world is the least creative thing I ever seen. Only a few city assets and 3D "cool" words floating by a generic city.
With that in mind, it could be reasonable to want, at least, something funny, but that's another bummer. Only a few characters are likable.
In sum, Trolls 3 could be passed as the first AI scripted movie and I would believe it because it is no soul in it.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
A well story with a over-simplified explanation
Since the creation of Super Mario Brothers franchise, the story of Mario was simple. A big enemy to be defeated in order to save the princess.
This time, Mario is a regular human that travels to another world and have to save his brother Luigi from a big enemy. Nothing changed significantly. However, everything is oversimplified or is not explained at all. Mario never question why he is on another world. Peach never question the fact that a human could travel to that world. Even Mario's family live their lives as Mario and Luigi didn't disappear.
In my opinion, the screenplay writers were more upset about adding more references to the movie more than creating a solid argument. Even they skipped Mario's characters arc at all. He is the same person after the Mushroom kingdom.
I really enjoyed the movie, but I think that Illumination have to upgrade its writers. They showed that is possible to compete with Disney on animation quality, but a good idea or IP is not good enough to support a hole script.
Velma (2023)
What is this?
I gave this a chance despite all the hate but OMG this is terrible. They are trying to be funny so hard that is simply cringy. No, is not because is feminist or whatever. Infinite train is a great example of how to explore different taboos with humor and drama. Velma is only a "cynical" serie of forced jokes with no relatable or interesting characters or even an interesting mystery.
I don't understand the logic of the series either. I mean, on the first episode Velma's classmates hates her because they think she murdered the girl but, on the same scene, Fred cuts some guys leg and no one cares.
Tenet (2020)
A Christopher Nolan Melting pot
This movie is Christopher Nolan putting all what he likes on a movie but without any effort. Expensive cars and clothes, abstract scientific concepts (with no sense in this movie), a lot of exposition and the worst: a principal character same as Batman, but with no personality, backstory or motivation. The time concept it's interesting but it can't supports a whole movie. I think that Nolan need to comeback to basics and make a movie like Memento. A lot of budget have been making him really lazy.
Encanto (2021)
It's about family since latin's perspective
Encanto it's a movie about the character's inside conflict. Just like Soul, this movie tries to being an introspective way to tell a magical story and it's great! Disney have ever understanding the magic the European way, and how they portray the "magical realism" of García Marquez shows that there's a world to be explored in terms of adventure and magic. It's not Aladdin, it's not Frozen, it's an original story for Latin people. That's why some North American families could not relate themselves with this story and that's okay, because the conflict of Alma's grandmother it's the conflict of a lot of Latin mothers around the world.
Yeah, not all the songs are catchy as always, but I think the great lesson for the kids at the end of the movie worth the price of the ticket.
Who Are You, Charlie Brown? (2021)
A Charles Shultz tribute? Yes and no.
This is a well tell documentary that uses the comedy and graphic style of Peanuts series. Nevertheless, the weird interpretation that some of the guests make about Shultz's work, forcing a relation with feminism, LGBT and racial issues, makes this documentary uncomfortable at some points. Especially taking in account that they deliberately cut all about his Christian faith. For example, they never talked about how the Christmas special ended with Jesus story and how that's the real meaning of Christmas.
In summary, this is a documentary about Peanuts beginnings, their impact on society and how this could fits with some cultural agendas.
