Good one

Very good movie, while watching it I remember "Night on earth" and "Mistery train". its all movies the same class and quality. There is nothing to add about how well-done, meaningful and multidimensional Knoflikari is. As bonus we can see there as actor probably the most famous modern Prague sculptor, author of Black Babies on Žižkov Television Tower, St Vaclav on dead horse, 2 men pissing on Czech republic and others. I bought this DVD only for getting first impression about modern Czech cinema and I think it was one of the best possible choice. As for me, last segment about ghost of American pilot was a bit of childish and primitive in Hollywood happy-end style, but maybe it's what Czech guy means about black Czech humor?

Funny, nice and cross-dressing

"Das Wirtshaus im Spessart" is one of my favourite movies since childhood. It still interesting as fun adaptation fairy tale to modern life. Script writers joke about clergy, army, society. Otto Stor as Reverend trying to escape responsibility by quotation from the Bible. Liselotte Pulver as Contesse von Sandau - the best choice. She is very expressive and imitate male's behavior so hilarious! If you like Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann in "Pirates of the Caribbean", you must see Liselotte Pulver's performance. She's the One.

Everything changes in 50 years: it was movie about highwaymen want to be honest, but now is more usual about "how good is to be robber".

good for the independent cinema lovers

I saw this movie twice and going to look once again Bertolucci's and Michael Radford's segments.

So, my experience talks: it's not right choice for looking at 11 p.m. after hard work day. For looking non-commercial cinema you must have just a little open mind.

It's a real pleasure, that all contributions so different, from simple mixed own old works, as Jean-Luc Godard has done to Bertolucci's talented and deep adaptation a mythological story of water to modern life. You know, that all of them started from one place - 10 minutes limit and theme - about time. After all, you see eight author's ways and points of view.

One of them I find too bore ("Vers Nancy"). Two another - unexpected not interesting ("Ten Minutes After", "Dans le noir du temps"). That's worst what I can say about.

Even against my opinion that director must not work as DJ, but create something new, Jiri Menzel's elegant, warm and simple contribution hold on. Exactly such effect after cool emotionless sci-fi "Addicted to the Stars". New James Bond looks convincingly in every role of someone, who is completely devoted one idea.

Educative (in good meaning) family movie
3 September 2006
A bit of strange and light, a bit of sad and very kind movie for those who enjoy by looking at ordinary people's life on screen. Unfortunately, my poor English doesn't let me to quote some really fun phrase from it! it's good problem-family-movie like "What's eating Gilbert Grape?", but not so radical and deep in anatomy of family separation. Main characters are honesty Hugo and her divorced parents and defenseless Floyd and careless insane Franz and unknown hitchhiker as sometimes me and maybe you, - anyone feel void from time to time and want to stop keeping themselves close to another people. Sometimes it happens.
