Thunder Road (2018)
A reminder of the fragile nature of ordinary people
A straight-laced police officer has a left-field moment setting off a chain reaction of blows to his heart. This film does a great job at exhibiting the pressure that comes with trying to uphold an extreme conscientiousness. Officer Jim is at a stage where this pressure can only be released by caving to into wild, knee-jerk reactions that can be suppressed no longer! I felt like this was a cathartic purge for and on behalf of other conscientious and fragile citizens. An allegory to remember to practice some self-care :)
In My Blood It Runs (2019)
Highlights the importance of culture
Maya Newell is a talented storyteller who gives kids and the things they have to say the chance to shine. A very fine and sensitive compilation of scenes that illustrates the inner conflict experienced by a young boy with dual cultural identity, in addition to the barriers the Arrernte people face preserving their culture. This reflection on the beauty and value of culture made me feel deep sadness imagining how a minority culture may be lost forever if it is not respected.
A Hidden Life (2019)
Long length enhances the film's message
I had a strange combination of thoughts and emotions while seeing this at the cinema. Awe, annoyance, calmness, impatience, determination to be present in the film but also to finish it...the length of the film acts like a trial of stoicism the viewer tests themselves against to reach the end. To allow yourself to feel this conflict is to begin to connect with Franz's circumstance and inner dialogue. A very beautiful film!
Christine (2016)
Life-like illustration of depression
Just wow! Rebecca Hall plays a unique role circling around a side of depression which I had not yet seen in a film before - very honest and sensitive expression of irritability and proud loneliness. It makes you reflect on occasions when you or others you've known have similarly shown resistance against support from a work and family network. A film that triggers such a strong motivation to better empathise with and support those experiencing depression I feel
Paterson (2016)
Encourages a state of mindfulness
When I was a child I used to be troubled/annoyed by the confusion that poetry would cause me to feel. Now, for me, a way of appreciating poetry involves letting the experience linger without excessive thoughts to disrupt it. Be open to adopting this state of mindfulness while viewing and I think you will really enjoy this film :)
