Frames Per Second: Black Mirror - "Joan Is Awful" (S6, E1) (2023)
Meta in the Worst Way Possible
Black Mirror has officially jumped the shark. Criticism of an entity coming from that entity itself is toothless and lame. I really don't want to hear about what Netflix thinks of itself. The story was already just derivative and uninteresting and then they decided to throw in the twist at the end which was basically a way dumber version of San Junipero. It really added nothing to the story except some buzz sci-fi of quantum computing/simulation theory. But it doesn't add anything to the theme or anything to chew on, just makes for maybe one or two decent jokes about the actors. What a waste of time, other than maybe Salma Hayak's role as herself being somewhat comedic. Black Mirror has lost its edge.
Atlanta: The Big Payback (2022)
A poignant not-quite satire.
As much as others might be saying, this episode is not a satire. Satire exaggerates something that is true in order to poke fun at the absurdity of it. This is true in some scenes, such as the "you were white yesterday" line. However, the goal of this episode is not to make you laugh at the absurdity of a white man losing everything, in order to say either "look how ridiculous reparations are getting" or "look how ridiculous white people's ideas of reparations are". The episode is shot and acted much too well for it to be a comedy: it wants you to empathize with Marshall. But why? The key is with White Earnest's speech, who in my opinion is simply a mouthpiece for Donald Glover/Black Earnest but put through a white man's mouth in order for white people to listen. If you can empathize with Marshall for losing everything due to what his ancestors did, then you must be able to empathize with black people who lost countless opportunities due to what was done to their ancestors.

I almost cried at Gon's passionate yelling for real.
Ice Cream Man (2020)
Not Just a YouTube Video
While the personality known as "IDubbbz" may attract his fair share of controversy, edgy humor, and satire, this documentary, and this review, is none of those things.
Ice Cream Man, with its focus on the socially awkward yet unashamed Dax Flame, strikes a perfect balance between hilarious laugh-out-loud comedy and the truly melancholic despair. At times, it will seem like Dax is putting on a persona, but in my humble opinion, I believe that Ian was able to capture the pure untethered energy of Dax in all of its awkward, genuine, glory. With pacing and cinematography rivaling Hollywood produced documentaries, combined with the rollercoaster of emotions you are bound to feel while watching this film, it would be a mistake so simply discount this work of art based on it's creator's past endeavors.
