Rurôni Kenshin: Meiji kenkaku romantan (2023)
Painful
I tried going in with an open mind into this but having very recently watched the original one (for the first time) I couldn't help but compare. I have not read the manga.
It was actually very disturbing for me to watch this - the art is horrible, faces have been animated quite badly (compare, for example, Kaoru-dono's face) and most seriously, the BGM is crappy. Above all, the soul and feel of the OG is missing in the remake - believe me when I say that it was the soul and feel of the OG that made it such a great anime.
For some reason, a couple of story points may have been explained better here, hence I didn't rate it 1/10. They took away the magic and old-world/classic charm of Kenshin - for that I do not forgive them.
To be fair, I'll watch a few more episodes and if something improves I'll update here but until then, curses be upon the creators of this abomination.
Update after Edit 2 : the story seems more fleshed out in this version and a couple of points that are never addressed in the original version are discussed too - hence, upgrading the rating to 3/10.
Uncharted (2022)
Not even a bad joke
Recall every bad movie you've watched come out of Hollywood in past 20 years and take all the worst elements of those movies. Combine those elements. Voila : Uncharted (2022)!
Ranjish Hi Sahi (2022)
Missed Opportunity!
This could have been an absolute gem if not for a few issues including pacing, some of the BGM (you'll notice a remarkable similarity to Harry Potter theme in places, I kid you not), strange inclusion of 'The Watchman' character (which, to me, undermined the narrative) etc. Lacluster effort in creating a '70s vibe (they throw in bell bottoms and a couple other things but ultimately an unsucessful attempt). Proper editing overall would have made this such a great series. Presentation of timeline also leaves a lot to be desired and contributes to pacing issues. In many scences, the sound seemed hollow and not in a melancholy/depressing portrayal rather as an editing flaw - as if they forgot the surroundings.
The acting is in general very good specially by Amala Paul. The portrayal, psychological profile and behaviorial aspects of Amna Parvez are absolutely spot on. I would have loved to see more screen time from her as well as Anju (the wife). Other performances also leave their mark. The cinematography is nice.
Surely worth a binge watch on a lazy evening!
Paatal Lok (2020)
The best out of all Indian TV Shows
There are several reviewers who specially came to write a review since this has such a low rating.
There is absolutely no show in India till date which comes even close to Paatal Lok in terms of the setting it portrays. The cast is almost perfect. For some reason I did not like the character/portrayal of Dolly but the rest are perfect beyond anything I can say.
The only real gripe I had with this show was with the team who wrote the english dialogues. It's like they didn't even bother to put an effort and just copied dialogues and lines from popular west culture as portrayed in their novels and shows. That was contrasted by the hindi etc dialogues which were perfect to the very last one. This created an effect like having your favourite food and then suddenly someone slaps you in the middle.
Another issue was with the background music. It could definitely have been better. But do note that I am nitpicking here and I am very particular about BGM. As an example I consider the BGM of Twin Peaks very nice.
Other than these two factors everything was really really good. Please watch it and review this because this series does need more recognition for what it is.
Actual Rating : 9/10 (just rating 10 to balance the negative ones)
My favourite Indian shows in order :
1. Paatal Lok (9/10)
2. Asur, The Family Man & Panchayat (8.5/10)
3. Sacred Games (7.5/10)
