Gary and His Demons (2018)
Can't stop laughing, I WANT MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where do I begin with this show? It's amazing, it's Canadian and My goodness what a gem! From the moment the first episode started I was laughing my ass off until I had a coughing fit. It definitely helps that this show is similar to Rick n' Morty and one could say it was inspired. I don't know if it was or wasn't inspired by Rick n' Morty but the show distinguishes itself in a fresh and hilarious way.
My breakdown of the show and why I gave it a 10
------------------------------------------------------------------
Acting - On point acting, great dialogue and the characters all have funny and interesting voices. Gary sounds like a more serious Toad from the Super Mario Bros series, his partner Hanley is just a nice guy who is very likable, his boss Leslie is an over the top "Sparkle Mind" type of woman and the demons all have silly voices. What's not to like?
Story - It's pretty straightforward. Gary wants to retire but he can't because he is the chosen one, this makes him super grumpy, incredibly impatient and insensitive. His character is perfected by these qualities.
Animation - The animation is rough but it's clear they are purposefully making bastardized character designs. The movement of the characters is vibrant and very animated, the demons all have wonderful expressions and the level of injury characters sustain is absolutely visceral.
Content - This show is an adult cartoon, there is nudity, sex, violence, swearing, gore, demonic and folkloric tales but no drugs or excessive political correctness. These are all amazing qualities for this show to have as it embraces itself with pure hilarity and over the top social commentary.
Quality - The show is not the greatest animated show to exist, but the upgrade in quality from season 1 to season 2 is quite striking yet transitions smoothly. I almost disliked season 1's quality, but season 2 has the style nailed down.
SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR????? WATCH THIS SHOW DAMNIT!
Super Crooks (2021)
Heart Stopping Special Effects That Work Amazing With The Animation
VFX and Animation
Really the cornerstone of this series, it had me feeling the most in awe. I remember at least 10 moments during this series where my heartbeat went from 140 to 60 to almost stopping completely, what a rollercoaster ride this was. The animations were top notch and you really get a sense for the different powers and how they stack up. The most impressive part I would say is that death is a real thing, people are not invincible and many characters die. The stakes have never been higher. With the animation and graphical detail delivered by this series you get an incredibly visceral picture of the brutality that these characters experience. After this bloodbath I won't look at a superhero the same way ever again.
Main Character and his Love interest
The main character, Johnny Bolt starts out as a kid, young, dumb but with superpowers. Typical until we see him develop into a more arrogant and selfish person, wanting to become a hero for the fame and the glory. A horrific (And albeit over the freakin' top, in a bad way) accident. He then realizes he ain't cut out for the hero life. Over the course of the series we see him grow from a young rebel into a serious criminal. What sets him apart from other villains however is that he is in a morally grey area. As the Union of Justice, the league of heroes in this world also lies in this morally grey area it seems. As casualties from their "heroic" acts are common, we see this with the obvious destruction they cause, they wreak havoc on the city to catch the criminals only to be praised as a hero. This is not implied and is a main theme of the series, it is literally stated by some of the characters. In the end Johnny Bolt does get his super hero ending as he tries to steal from the most powerful Super Villain instead of the Union of Justice. He succeeds and thus takes all the money of the main Super Villain. Making him sort of a Super Hero in the end, one might argue. Super Crooks ends up as one of the tightest superhero stories I've seen. It's Ocean's 11 the Anime, but is that a bad thing?
Would be a 9 but it was a little too steamy in the beginning. Like I get it the protag and his girl bone a lot, but this led to a bit of a drag when the romance began to develop between the two lovers and it fell flat as a result.
I feel that a more worthy scene to replace 3 sex scenes would be to at least show the day they got together, Or something more interesting. But don't get me wrong, their relationship improved beyond that in the later half so it wasn't an absolute wreck. The redemption they both have is astounding and to say the least, inspiring.
Gekijouban Toriko: Bishokushin no supesharu menyû (2013)
Great Movie about eating food, More action packed than I thought!!
This movie started off fine with a lot of humor, But afterwards it followed the same formula as the show. This is good as I personally like the show and found it most exhilarating. The action is incredible, old characters are powered up like they are at the end of the human world arc and the ending is heart warming.
It would've been better if other enemies had a chance to fight but I guess they show up for the looks? Very unsatisfying.
Overall a great movie to eat some food too after you have finished the anime.
Yasuke (2021)
This anime is haunted by what it could've been...
From the beginning this anime is already hyped up from the trailers and people's online excitement. But Yasuke Doesn't live up to the Hype as the story is all over the place, the characters have poor/minimal expose. The visuals were actually kinda bad if you are used to anime, sure they are clean but unimpressive considering many tropes already common in anime.
The main Character; Yasuke, is a pretty cool guy, good voice actor and good design/style. However his constant spouting of poetic verses and honorable quotes seems pointless and almost robotic in a story full of robots, magic and werewolves. His story takes a backseat due to this young girl/plot key character taking all the limelight.
I wont bother talking about other characters because I know you all wanted to watch this for Yasuke.
It's worth watching if you purely want to see visuals and a cool main black protagonist.
But you'll be sorry when you realize the story is bad and the characters are stagnant.
Monster Hunter (2020)
I'm A Fan Of MH And This Movie Made My Heart Pound!!!!
If you are a monster hunter fan you might be in for the best treat as this movie gives us amazing action like that in the game.
The movie starts off as any movie typically does with a little expose of the main characters and their role in the universe. Very typical of movies and was not the best part at all. But soon enough the action comes and it comes hard, Mila and T. I. play a great duo for the entry of the plot and without spoiling anything T. I. does a phenomenal job with his scene in the caves. I also want to mention the level of action and skill from Mila and Tony Jaa at the beginning which made this epic as soon as it started with the fight sequences. There are some calm parts and even a hilariously wigged Ron Perlman which made me laugh and question the point of his hairdo but someone clearly insisted it stayed. Would've been a perfect movie if it weren't for a few blunders it's still an amazing movie and a must see. I really wish I saw this in theatres, too bad they were shutdown due to Covid. Bad timing :(
Us (2019)
Plot Twist = Were You Even Thinking?
Horrible movie with numerous plot holes, the cast was good but too bad the script was absolute hot garbage. It makes no sense at all, the twist at the end is just one giant plot hole it basically defeats the purpose of the movie entirely.
The director is from SNL so I mean can a comedian really direct?
