Romeo & Juliet (2013)
A Boring Adaptation of Shakespeare's Play
Romeo & Juliet (2013) directed by Carlo Carlei is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's play of the same name that tells the story of hatred among two families and of forbidden love.
I haven't read William Shakespeare's original body of work, however, I can certainly say that it is most likely much better than this adaptation. I wasn't expecting this picture to be something amazing, but I was fairly disappointed with the result.
The acting in this film ranges from below average to pretty poor depending on the actor/actress. In my opinion, the actors don't seem like they fit into the era they have been placed into. The characters are quite uninteresting, unbelievable, and have a lack of character development. The script had dialogues that felt incredibly forced into the film, which lead to unnatural line delivery. The editing was nothing special and at times was painful to look at, most notably during the fight scenes, during which the number of cuts was disorientating and confusing. The cinematography was also nothing special, except for a few good looking shots. While I was watching the picture I didn't even notice that there was music playing in the background most of the time and when I did notice it, it was some generic classical piece. The one thing I found good was the costume design, which felt appropriate to the century that the story was set in. This was slightly ruined by the makeup that was far too advanced and looked like it was from our current age.
I think the runtime of 1 hour and 58 minutes was unjustified as many of the scenes were pointless and could have been completely skipped or cut down to shorten them. The movie failed to grab a hold of my interest in the beginning and it never achieved to do so throughout the entire runtime. I was experiencing boredom during the whole film and in the end, I thought that I could have been watching a much better one.
In conclusion, I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone I know, as I believe that they would find it boring. The one thing I find the most important about it, is that it highlights better films and makes you appreciate their qualities even more.
