This World Won't Break (2019)
Who doesn't love an underdog story?
The lead actor and real life singer/songwriter Greg Schroeder gives a realistic and touching portrayal as Wes Milligan, a down and out troubadour trying to realize his dream of being a well respected musician, but his personal troubles and own self doubt threaten to derail his hopes forever. It's a movie for all the dreamers out there that continue to create as they stare into the void of being forgotten by time, place and maybe even to those around them because they've no results to speak of.
Lucky Day (2019)
Lucky Day is a good time!!!
If you're a fan of Roger Avery then you should really like this movie. It's cool, funny, inventive and hilariously dark. To me it's like he has taken everything he has learned and done up to this point (excluding Beowulf and maybe Mr. Stitch) and created a wildly entertaining ride that seems familiar and new at the same time. There are flourishes of some of his most famous collaborators such as Tarantino and Brett Easton Ellis except these are pushed entirely through Roger Avery's filter which help to highlight his contributions those past works even more. I can't think of a better actor than Crispin Glover for him to collaborate with and it pays off for both immensely. This is one of Crispin's best roles and the scene with the G-ride on hydraulics is probably one of the greatest distillations of what I expect are Mr. Avary's sensibilties. It's absurd, funny and truthful and his use of a rotary dial phone is as good as anything Hitchcock ever did in my opinion.
