John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Absolute powerhouse of a movie
It's just a fantastic flick, just like the previous three movies. The fight scenes are a work of art, and the dialog is refreshingly sparse in an industry full of bloated exposition.
It really is worth a watch. Don't think about how durable John is in the film, it's not supposed to be realistic in any way, though they get the gunplay accurate in every film.
Just turn your brain off and enjoy. Not every movie needs a profound message. Sometimes you need an 80s style action hero to kill hundreds and hundreds of baddies in bloody conflicts that result in more death and destruction than some small wars have.
The incendiary shotgun scene made me weep openly. Maybe.
Dororo (2019)
An ambush of emotions
I don't really get INTO shows or movies that much. I'll usually forget the names of the main characters directly after I finish, and RARELY does any media make me feel anything.
THIS show however is DIFFERENT. I felt feelings. Lots of feelings.
There's something stirring about watching Hyakkimaru grow (literally) as a character over the course of the show. You really root for him and you'll find yourself saying "YEAH! Screw the samurai, screw the land, get your body back bro!"
Every hero needs the soft and fluffy companion, and Dororo fits perfectly. Her empathy bouncing off of the wall that is Hyakkimaru is entertaining at first, and then just plain emotional when you see the lengths she goes through to communicate with a guy who can't see or hear or even feel. And of course, she ends up being the person who ties Hyakkimaru to humanity. I think that's why the show is named after her.
Anyway that's about as deep as I'll get. I felt things, you'll feel things, everybody felt things. Watch it. It's dope.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Ignore the negative review bombing
This was a great movie. Action was tight, the acting was great and the story was better than people give it credit for.
The reason it's getting lower reviews is because of some unsavory hateful banshees who can't stand to see Chris Pratt be successful. It's not about the movie, it's about Chris refusing to come out as a flaming leftist.
So ignore these freaks, grab some microwave popcorn, and just enjoy this movie for what it is.
WandaVision (2021)
Not an important review
I'm not saying anything about the plot because I haven't seen the whole first episode yet.
BUT
I've watched an unhealthy amount of 50s television in my life and I have to point out a few tiny things.
The voices... Or perhaps the way they're recorded aren't right. I understand our speech patterns have changed in the last 70 years, but you have to understand that 50s television shows were often based on radio the shows that preceded them.
See, actors and actresses perform differently when all you can experience is their voice. They over expressed emotions vocally to make up for bot being able to see their faces. (Check out some old radio shows. They're incredible and entertaining.)
So when television became a thing, radio moved over to television. It was an incredible new opportunity for old radio shows, but there was a problem. The fans already knew what they sounded like. They would be turned off if their favorite characters all of a sudden were completely different than they remembered.
So the actors simply kept up their radio voices. In my opinion it made for more immersive television, but my opinion is neither here nor there.
My point is that if you want to parody 50s television, you also have to parody 50s radio. Their voices aren't quite right.
Anyway. Thanks.
Run Hide Fight (2020)
The start of a new film revolution
Once, long ago there was a time when hollywood was daring and provocative. They asked questions people didn't necessarily want to hear, and they didn't apologize for it.
Now hollywood is a joke. They're nothing more than a political mouthpiece for stuffy elitists who want to signal their many "virtues" to as many people as possible. Entertaining and thought provoking content has long ago been moved to the back burner.
Run Hide Fight is like Hollywood kryptonite.
For the first time in a LONG time, we have a female protagonist with a... Dare I say it? ACTUAL CHARACTER ARC. Guess what ladies and gentlemen? She is FLAWED! Goodness me, say it isn't so! A FLAWED FEMALE CHARACTER??? No such thing!
Seems unbelievable, but no, she actually grows by the end of her experience. I won't go into spoilers, but through the movie she deals with loss and the feelings that come with it. She struggles to make dangerous, selfless decisions and doesn't always know what the right thing to do is.
Regardless of any of that, she's a tough, scary, badtothebone protagonist. you'll see that 30 seconds into the movie.
She's not the only remarkable character. The antagonist is genuinely unhinged and terrifying, but not at all mindless. He's remarkably and chillingly clever, outsmarting the system without much effort at all. You can actually watch him continue manipulate his minions in real time, playing on their insecurities and even exploiting the mental disorder of one of them. They're not the typical endlessly loyal, mindless drones that Hollywood antagonists employ.
As you can clearly see, I'm not good at giving reviews. I also don't know how to end one, so I'll leave you with this.
Run Hide Fight is an incredible, thought provoking action movie that delivers on all fronts. The budget isn't even close to anything coming out of hollywood, but it doesn't show. The acting of EVERYONE is exceptional, and the camera work is incredible.
Just give it a watch.
Kenja no Mago (2019)
Deserves more than it gets
It's a great anime for people who love overpowered heros. I understand that's kind of a niche taste, but I quite enjoyed the thought that was put into it.
Oh, and an anime where the MC actually gets the girl? No failed love confessions or endless awkward "will they won't they". It's refreshing.
