The Duellists (1977)
10/10
Outstandingly good, bravo Mr Scott!

Wonderfully atmospheric period costume drama, great scripting, does not fall into the trap of sacrificing the human story for the expensive 'eye candy' of lavish battle scenes and special effects. Ridley Scott's penchant for creating breathtakingly beautiful visual vignettes, the legacy of his early days spent in upscale television advertising no doubt, created for me a seemingly authentic reproduction of the people and places of war-torn Europe in the early years of the nineteenth century. His portrayal of the terrible events during the retreat from Moscow of Napoleon's Grande Armee are among the most moving and memorable cinematic images I have ever seen. Nearly thirty years have passed since I watched this film, yet the scenes and the atmosphere of the movie remain as vivid and as tangible to me now as they were on the day I first saw them. Bravo Mr Scott, c'est magnifique!

Execrable!

Quite simply the worst film I have ever seen... and I've seen a few stinkers in my time. More plot holes than a Swiss cheese. Patronising throughout, cliché-ridden, grossly insulting to the intelligence. This Costner ego-trip deservedly sank without trace to become the most disastrous financial failure in the history of movies to date. Confirmed my suspicions at the time that Costner was a vastly over-rated actor with an ego the size of Colorado. If you've never seen this turkey, do yourself a big favour and continue in your blessed state of being. Makes my skin crawl and my throat dry just thinking about how truly awful it is. Only wish I could have given it a -10 rating.
