Ex Machina (2014)
Best AI film yet!
This was better than Spielberg's AI, which was a decent film as well. So as far as being the best true Sci-Fi film dealing with the subject this one gets the nod. The Terminator films deal with AI, yes, but those are Action/Sci-Fi and not really in the same genre for me. Love Oscar in this one too. As for the story, I typically find stories about humanlike robots that can learn to feel a bit fanatical. Yes, I am pointing at the Terminator films again with that. However, Ex Machina feels more grounded as in, if it ever did happen, this is a good representation of what we might see. A grounded take, I suppose. Worth a viewing for sure.
The Mandela Effect (2019)
Another good low budget sci-fi adventure!!!
I am on a low budget sci-fi kick this week for sure. This one is a great tale on a subject that we can all relate to. Are we all living in the Matrix, do other universes intersect? Great way to pass an afternoon while in quarantine. Definitely check this one out. Not going to spoil, but the motivation solving the Mandela Effect for the main character is just one of this films strengths for sure.
Expulsion (2020)
Low expectations turn into high payoff
Read the real critics reviews! Honestly, I watched the trailer and even the first 20 or so minutes of the film and I thought, "oh no." But, hang in there...once the protagonist duo breaks into their co-workers house the twists and turns begin. However, unlike so many of the same old, same old types of higher budgeted films this one keeps you guessing until the BIG twist at the end. If you can sit through some exposition at the beginning the payoff is huge and I was truly entertained. The main star gives a performance that sells both "multiverse" versions of the character, "Scott." And his sidekick, "Vince," compliments his performance perfectly. The last monologue is truly epic! I am only holding off 10 stars because they could have done more with a bigger budget, but the story and the payoffs kept me guessing. Low budget Sci-Fi has a new bar to meet. Please make a sequel!
