Jeepers Creepers: Reborn (2022)
Just awful.
I can't really say much more than what others have put before me really. I just felt I needed to write a review to help safeguard any other potential viewers.
It's too late for me but it needn't be for you honestly! There is no word other than tripe.
Peter Brooks character was the only redeeming feature and the film pooped on him at the end.
The Creeper now just acts badly, the whole portrayal reminded me of something out of green street with its dire swagger and false mannerisms and the two protagonists had as much chemistry between them as a plugged in kettle in the bath.
I should have heeded the warnings when Dee Wallace appeared early on as she hasn't giben herself to a good movie since E. T.
Anyway, stay away. Watch paint dry or put vinegar in your eyes, either option is better than this film!
Hellraiser (2022)
Hull are on a roll!
I'm always critical of a reboot but this has been done cleverly and all round its a good Hellraiser film. It doesn't steep itself too much in homage and it takes a subtle but accepting change on the lore that still keeps its roots planted.
The storyline was a little obvious, no spoilers, but most will get the "plot twist" early on. But, the acting cinematography and audio was all on point (excuse the pinhead pun!) And it is certainly a film I ill watch again.
Jamie Clayton pulls off pinhead perfectly and the other cenobytes are "tastefully" and well performed. As you can imagine there are a couple of minor plot driving decisions made and events but all in all a very good reboot of a franchise which unfortunately got stomped on by cheap cash grabs.
Solid 7 out of 10.
Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
Not a bad film but it forgot itself
After so many years of anticipation to a follow up of such a great 90s film that was full of intrigue, fun, mysticism, magic, good versus evil wrapped up in simple but brilliant storytelling I was hyped for this.. but..!
Minor spoilers...
Have the audience build empathy with the Sanderson sisters completely stomps on the singular premise that made the original so simplistically great.
In doing so it extended the film but somehow lost more charm and excitement with it.
It is still an O. K film and a new audience today that have not seen the first would probably enjoy it a lot more than those who enjoyed and loved the superb begininings. But, it is a sequel and that's why it scores low from me because it has somewhat become a sad parody of itself with the emotional ending and the dawning of good witches...
Overall this missed the chance of being a bigger, better, funnier, and more extravagant tale by simlly using the winning formula of the first film.
Acting, cinematography, sound and everything else was very good... it was always going to be let's be honest, and there will be some rising stars for sure from this... but alas, it was all marred by the 'let's all be fluffy" script.
It's a mid range film, happy to see it it premiere on Disney+ but I would have had a bitter taste had I paid to go to the cinema ro see it.
Alive (2018)
Painfully annoying
Solid acting, great little premise, great protagonist ending, some head turning little bits in there too which do make you whince.
But...
It was painfully drawn out, the protagonists continually chose the most ridiculous things to do purely to help the movie along when there were obvious things to do otherwise...
Then the most worn out trope right at the end there could be.
If you do watch it you will hear yourself say, "oh just do (insert action)" , "Really?" "FFS" a fair bit, and none of this is in an excitement induced way because you are riveted to the screen. No. It is because you have had enough and just want to see how it climaxes.
That's my warning for you!
Last Shift (2014)
Great acting but an utter mess
Short synopsis is, a rookie cop has to guard a police station for a night but the night happens to coincide with the anniversary of a satanic happening.
That's all you need to know.
The story was a mess, it was haphazard and so much was pointless filler. No tension is built up and there is no point during the entirety of the film were there any feeling of unease or horror for either myself or my partner who ended up that bored she painted her toes!
It's a shame because the acting was pretty good from the protagonist, some parts felt like she was truly losing her mind but lesser can be said of those around her though.
There just seems no justification for the script, unless it was heavily edited after filming to compensate run time needs I can't see how this got funding.
Matriarch (2018)
I made it through so you don't have to.
I will say a couple of positives first. Charlie Blackwood who plays the female protagonist does a great job in her role with the "god" awful script and 95% of her fellow actors she was working with as does Briony Monroe but that's where acting quality ends.
Also there are some great shots and well filmed scenes too with a good ambience to them. But that's where the cinematography plusses end too.
The complete ridiculous direcrion of the Swiss cheese narrative and plot furthering decision making was just irritating., I mean really irritating.
This also should have been a short film because its run length is way too long for what's filled between start and finish so you are faced with some kind of attempt to build the characters both pro and anti but that falls on its face too.
If it was a tongue in cheek or had a dark comedy edge, then some could be forgiven... but it isn't. It's just plain bad.
Stay well away, whoever is marking this up must be on the payroll!
The Devil's Familiar (2020)
Just awful.
I would like to say it was trying to be purposely comical but it wasn't...
I think they were reading the script as they were going as there are 2 second pauses between dialogue between characters!!
I've seen stop motion animation from the 70s with more fluidity!
House of Dust (2013)
Actually Dust, dust your house, this is awful.
Premise great, lead actress obviously very talented, some glimmers from a couple of supporting actresses too.
That's it.
Story... AWFUL, FX... AWFUL, Script... Awful
The only way this can be a triple A title.
Truth Seekers (2020)
Something you have been missing, trust me.
Well I couldn't stop watching... binged the entire thing with copious amounts of tea and thoroughly enjoyed every second.
The acting, as was expected, was top notch. The humour was nailed right on for the ambience of the series and the length of episode just right.
Camera shots, lighting, sound, representation all perfection and polished to a tee. I cannot praise this enough.
Also it is nice to have Leicestershire mentioned in a show for a change!!
At first you start by thinking, "Oh, short story, seemed a bit quick to tie it up" but then realise as you progress that the stories arent finished... I wont elaborate but you get a good sense of fulfilment as it concludes.
It is pure Nick Frost and Simon Pegg at its heart and you wont be disappointed, it is a definite must watch again for me and hopefully another season will follow as this could become greater than it already is.
The Witches (2020)
An adaptation kids will enjoy
Firstly, reading some reviews on here people seem to forget it is an adaptation of a book... NOT a remake, and they are also NOT paid movie critics... for good reason it seems.
This adaptation has been produced a little more frilly around the edges and not as dark so a more younger audience can enjoy it without the more sinister overtones from the 1990 film, say, akin more to a child's imagination that they would have from reading the book!!
Now that is out of the way!
This is a fun romp, my daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed it, the cgi was perfectly administered so it were more "Stewart little" and less "Jurassic Park" to highlight its childlike story telling. The plot, although differing from the book in settings was just as coincidental as it always has been and kept the fundamentals alive.
Our only concern was maybe it could have been 20 minutes longer just to tie up the story better and make it more fluid and my daughter would have liked the very ending to be like the 1990s version, (She loves a happy happy ending!) but, it was well acted, mild threats kept light hearted and fun all round.
Perfect for little ones and adults alike that enjoy a take on a kids classic and remember it is not an epic!
