Truly Madly Deeply (1990)
A wonderful and offbeat story about loss and grief
An amazing film, with a brilliant cast, and wonderfully directed by Anthony Minghella. Juliet Stevenson was fabulous in her portrayal of Nina, a woman struggling to cope as she deals with loss and grief. What could easily have just been a sad dramatic tale, instead explores Nina's differing emotions, and becomes a somewhat humorous and witty film in parts as we delve deep into her psyche and emotional state. The story grips from start to finish, and Alan Rickman deserves an honourable mention too, although if you haven't seen this yet, then to explain his role in this, maybe giving away too much. This film is not only powerful in terms of delivery, but takes unexpected turns without straying from the overall story. A wonderful film, and the classical music score by Barrington Pheloung is an absolute joy. A must see film.
Welcome to Sudden Death (2020)
Watch the original 1995 film instead...
I knew this wasn't going to be Shakespeare. I also wasn't expecting an acting masterclass either. But this film doesn't really know what it wants to be. The film is loosely based on the 1995 Jean-Claude Van Damme action film "Sudden Death" where a group of terrorists take control of a hockey stadium. Powers Boothe was the villain in that film, we had lots of action and one liners, and all told we had a memorable 1990's action flick. Fast forward 25 years, and this is anything but. I'm not even sure whether this is an unintentional comedy film or not, because the lack of context and poor dialogue actually made me want to laugh. The seriousness of the plot had gone right out of the window, and that's probably where the script deserves to be. The bad guys are hamming it up whenever they can, and there's literally no tension in any of the action scenes. And some scenes are almost a frame by frame copy of the aforementioned Jean Claude Van Damme film. Michael Jai White actually deserves better, and I'm waiting for Hollywood to give him the material and the scripts he deserves, unfortunately this one isn't it.
He's the only reason to watch this, and his scenes are OK so it's not a total disappointment. But this is a pale imitation of the 1995 original.
A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)
A Good day......to watch something else...
I'd like to start off by saying that I waited for this movie for a long time, and I could not wait until it hit cinemas, the anticipation was very great. There was no way that this could be a disaster. I'd watched the first 3 films, and even the fourth had it's moments of brilliance. How wrong I was about this film.
It is by far the worst film of the Die Hard franchise. Jai Courteney takes over every scene, pretending to be some kind of Jason Bourne rip- off, with very little charisma. Whether Bruce Willis was told to take a back seat in this one, I don't know, but this was certainly the case. John McClane is reduced to being a spare part.
The plot is wafer thin, with poor direction, and very little suspense. Considering how the original film was over 2 hours long, and this is just 98 minutes, tells you just how little effort has gone into the plot, or the script. The film also suffers from an over-use of CGI, making it look unrealistic.
There is no history about McClane's son, about how he became a super- spy, and why he was in Moscow. And how McClane just suddenly bumps into his son, in the middle of Moscow, understanding how vast and large the city is, makes this even less plausible.
Also, we don't even know about the villain's real motives, even at the end. And there is no memorable villain in this film. Think Jeremy Irons, or even Alan Rickman. All you get here, is clichéd Russian bad guys, embroiled in a terrorist plot you end up not caring about, with Anti-American motives.
I was becoming very restless in the cinema watching this, and I felt this was a waste of my time and money. If you are a Die Hard fan, please avoid. You WILL be severely disappointed, and upset at how John Moore could ruin a Die Hard film. There is no saving grace here.
Evil Aliens (2005)
'so bad, its good'
To be honest I knew what to expect before I watched this film, and I've got to say it has the worst acting I've ever seen. It does have its moments, and on a comedy level its very entertaining, but i'm afraid its not scary, and stupidity is taken to a new level. There's a lot of unnecessary gore, and the plot is all over the place. I have no idea why the aliens were evil, and why they even came to this remote part of wales, (i mean who'd go there anyway?) but I didn't care at that point, because I was amused by the costumes, and the bad CGI. As far as B-movies go, this deserves the title of 'being so bad, its good', and kudos to the film-makers, because they probably knew what they were doing. Long may these films continue.....
