Remaking American Medicine (2006)
Important series for all concerned about the quality of health care
As a health care professional for more than 40 years, I believe this is one of the best/balanced and clear reviews of the current state of the industry. Examples of high quality care as well as medical and nursing errors are covered. The importance of the family and patient input into all health care decisions and the need to ask questions about anything that is not well understood is emphasized.
All people who care about the quality of their health care and of the health care of their loved ones should see and comment to their own health care providers (nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners and PAs) about the content of the series and its implications for their own care. This is a must see series for both lay people and professionals.
Grey's Anatomy (2005)
Portrayal of health care providers
I admit it, I'm addicted to this show, despite my concerns about how health care providers are presented to the public. How awful that calling a doctor a nurse provided such disgust and anger that the comeback was "Who is the pig that called her a nurse??" As a nurse, I was repelled and frustrated by not only this characterization of nurses but the fact that nurses are rarely significant members of the health care team. I know, I know, this is fiction and a show about doctors, but it's remarkable how often physicians are showed providing nursing care - must be important if they do it, no?? Don't know why I keep watching but there is something about the individual characters that has me hooked....must be a weakness here somewhere....
