Body Double (1984)
Absolutely wonderful
This film is Brian DePalma's best. I love "Carlito's Way" enormously, but this is even better. The music and atmosphere are the film's best qualities, but the story is also gripping and takes unexpected turns. Check it out. It's a masterpiece.
Killjoy (2000)
Weird and wonderful
This is a truly bizarre yet enthralling movie with an entirely black cast. The music is haunting and there are moments which are truly terrifying. This may give you nightmares, or it will at least send a chill down your spine. Check it out.
Meet the Parents (2000)
Pretty lousy
This film wasn't awful, but it was far from being good. I love Robert DeNiro, but I find it embarrassing and stupid to see him in these idiotic comedy roles he now seems to be taking up all the time. 'Analyze This' was rubbish, and he has such good presence in serious films. I don't know why he bothers with these stupid films. Watch something wonderful, like 'Taxi Driver' instead.
Memento (2000)
Unbelievably bad
Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano are great actors. Yet why they signed themselves up for this sorry piece of filmmaking, with no redeeming features, is a true mystery. It is a confused conundrum, poorly developed, and thoroughly useless. Practically the worst movie ever made.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
A waste of time
O Brother, Where Art Thou? has to be one of the most dull, confused and laughable movies I've ever had the misfortune to see. It is awful. It follows three escaped prisoners in stripy costumes, getting into one misadventure after another. It is very distressing to see the Coen brothers make such a bad movie. I absolutely love 'Fargo', and 'The Big Lebowski' is pretty good, but please, don't bother renting this. You'll only be disappointed by it.
American Beauty (1999)
The best film ever made
Anybody who voted any less than 10 for this movie deserves to be shot. Kevin Spacey is the best actor in the world, and this is the most beautiful, sensitive and chilling movie ever made. Unfortunately morons can see great films, and fail to understand them.
The General's Daughter (1999)
Truly repulsive
This film is a massive disappointment. It has a great cast; John Travolta, James Woods, James Cromwell, but their talents go to waste in this really degrading and wholly sick movie. John Travolta is investigating the death of the general's (James Cromwell)daughter, and finds lots of kinky, degrading stuff along the way. This film is not only offensive and gratuitous, it is also very dull. A crashing bore of a movie, and a pretty nasty bore at that. Avoid at all costs.
Fight Club (1999)
Simply wonderful
This film has to be one of the best films ever made. Edward Norton is brilliant, Brad Pitt is better than ever, and it is one of the most audacious and relentlessly intelligent movies I have ever had the privilege to see. Some have compared it to 'Memento', but may I remind people that 'Memento' is a terrible, uniquely awful piece of film making, and 'Fight Club' is truly brilliant.
Breaking Up (1997)
Stultifyingly boring
The most dull film ever made. Completely devoid of any wit, charm or even plot. Uniquely depressing, wretched, uninspired, dragging, useless, sleep-provoking, irritating; I think I have already made my point.
Carnal Crimes (1991)
Heavenly
What can I possibly say that will conjure up the magic of "Carnal Crimes"? Carnal Crimes follows the life of Elize, her strange perverted husband, and Renny the mysterious artist, played beautifully by Martin Hewitt, who, in my opinion, is more talented than most 'A' list actors. The music, photography and settings of this film have a unique dream-like quality to them, and the story is so profound and intense that it should leave you dazed. Hewitt is dark and dangerous, and his performance is utterly compelling. The atmosphere in this movie is its most powerful feature, and watching it is like having an amazing dream-like experience. You won't know if you've really seen it, or were just dreaming by the end. One of my very favourite films.
