Past Lives: A Unique Love Story That Teaches Letting Go
23 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Past Lives is a film that deeply resonates with me, particularly as an immigrant in the United States who moved here for love. This movie transcends the typical love story, striking a chord with its core message about the necessity of letting go. It poignantly reminds us that life's journey might take unexpected turns, not always for the best, but leading us to paths distinctly our own. It invites us to reflect on our past selves and recognize that who we were doesn't always align with who we've become. The film questions the feasibility and desirability of reclaiming our former selves. Would returning to our past selves and loves restore them in their original form, or would they clash with the realities of who we have evolved into? "Past Lives" encourages us to embrace our journey and the transformation it brings, challenging us to reconcile our past with our present identity.

"Review: Emotional Tribute, Lacking Depth
23 February 2024
In my review of "Suncoast," I want to convey my deep emotional connection to the film, particularly towards the end. It's evident that the writer-director poured their heart into this project, crafting a poignant tribute to their brother. Their portrayal of pain and grief is not only heartfelt but also resonates deeply, underscoring the film's emotional core.

While "Suncoast" carries an important message and offers moments of genuine emotional power, its execution falls short in terms of character development and narrative coherence. The film struggles to fully integrate its components into a cohesive whole, leaving it feeling somewhat incomplete. Despite these critiques, I believe it's a movie worth watching for its heartfelt message and the emotional journey it endeavors to take its audience on. However, in my view, it doesn't quite achieve the rounded, well-crafted cinematic experience one might hope for.

Embracing Solitude and Sentiment: A Review of 'The Holdovers'
26 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
In the cinematic landscape of "The Holdovers," audiences are treated to a film that exudes warmth and genuine sentiment. The narrative revolves around three profoundly crafted characters, each left to their own devices during the Christmas season.

Central to the film's charm is Mr. Hunham, brought to life with charismatic brilliance by Paul Giamatti. Giamatti's performance, under the nuanced direction of Alexander Payne - a collaboration reminiscent of their acclaimed work in "Sideways" - adds a layer of depth and relatability to the character.

The film intricately weaves the lives of its protagonists: Mr. Hunham, the introspective history teacher; Mary Lamb, the soulful kitchen overseer; and Angus Tully, a student abandoned by his parents for the holidays. Their individual stories coalesce into a poignant exploration of solitude and companionship.

What stands out in "The Holdovers" is the masterful depiction of emotional dynamics and character development. The evolution of relationships and personal arcs is handled with a finesse that is nothing short of remarkable.

This film leaves an indelible impression on its viewers, not merely through its narrative but through the sensation it evokes. It serves as a reminder of the enduring power of storytelling, free from grandiose pretensions, harking back to the core of what makes cinema captivating: a story rich in character and human experience.

Grit and Grace in Scorsese's Latest
25 January 2024
Killers of the Flower Moon' raises the question: would it shine as bright without Scorsese? The film is anything but mediocre, featuring Scorsese's signature masterful direction, coupled with outstanding performances and a gripping, though stark, storyline that captivates.

Yet, its overextended length is a notable flaw, stretching beyond what the plot requires. This dilutes the otherwise intense experience.

Even though the movie has some really good parts, I don't think I'd watch it again. It definitely shows off Scorsese's talent, but it just doesn't hit the same high level as his other films. It's well-made, but when you compare it to his other work, it doesn't stand out as much. So, for me, it's not up there with the best of his movies.

Cinematic Elegance
25 January 2024
This film is a testament to skilled direction and features a remarkably compelling lead performance. Its visual storytelling is noteworthy, striking a balance between elegance and daring, particularly in its handling of intense scenes.

However, the plot treads familiar territory, a factor that somewhat undermines its overall impact. This familiarity in narrative is the film's primary weakness.

Notably, the film's resonance amplifies over time. It's a piece that invites deeper contemplation and rewards revisiting. A second viewing promises to enrich the experience, unveiling subtleties that enhance its cinematic value. A commendable piece for cinema enthusiasts."

I could just not finish it
30 January 2022
Granted Ridley Scott is a great director and when it comes to this type of movie he is one of the best Hollywood has to offer.

The cast is amazing, the cinematography, atmosphere and attention to detail is just so good but.... I could not finish the movie. I wasn't engaged with it and it became boring I did not even cared of what happened at the end.

I don't know if I went with the wrong anticipation, or I that I'm getting old and have less patience to slow burns or maybe the runtime brought me down a little.

I really wanted to love the movie and heard great things about it but unfortunately it was not for me.

Best episode so far. No Boba Fett...
30 January 2022
I think there is a problem when the best episode of the show has nothing to do with the show but with another different one in the same universe.

Great direction by Dallas Bryce Howard and good fan service overall.

This episode has done more for me than the entire show so far, the problem is and I repeat myself it was a The Mandalorian episode. Nothing to do with the narrative or the feel (those "alita" alike bikers need to go...) from the Book of Boba Fett.

What I liked: Great to see Denzel back again at his best playing a 90s crime investigator.

What I didn't: Feels very similar but doesn't even get close to what it pretends to be. (7)
