Blue Velvet (1986)
Atmospheric Glory
Americana bleeds obvious blue in this film. Should be watched back to back with Mulholland Drive, two films in a pod. What's cool about this film is the first time where you just don't know where it's going, and it's going in a scary place beneath the Americana sky.
Trees Lounge (1996)
It Rings True
Trees Lounge is an honest film that reminded me what towns in the tri state area are like. The film could be set in New Jersey or Connecticut, not Long Island. I suppose it could have been any suburban area in the US, one that has a milkman, and a local put like the Trees. Buscemi is superb in this one, deserved an Oscar for screenplay at least. He plays his character's plight to perfection. Some great scenes and a film that packs a big punch of heart and truth of what suburban life can be like for so many.
In Cold Blood (1967)
Not the book but as close as. you could probably get
As the novel is a masterpiece of course it's hard to match that standard. The film is still decent, and visually striking in black and white, good choice. Very good casting. A well directed version of the book but if you've read the book recently you might feel there's a lot missing, which comes with the territory.
A Safe Place (2020)
A film that punches above its weight
A film that makes you think outside the box, keeps you guessing, and is informative in its depictions of mental health. Kevin, one of the leads, reminded me of a modern day Randall P. McMurphy of Cuckoo's Nest fame, and Earl and Teddy were like comic book characters I've never seen before, and I mean that in a good way. I like that at the beginning of the film there were no credits that drag out the intro, which always seems a waste of time in films. Instead when we see text or the credits they are the descriptions of the main characters themselves, thought that was a nice touch, and kind of Goddardesque.
