Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
I just don't get it....
Yeah, so that was my first actual thought... "I just don't get it". Am I seeing things nobody else sees? Why are my experience of this movie so utterly completely different from others? How come this movie has a raiting of 8(!) (as of writing), when I just felt like leaving the theater during the movie? I just realized: I suck at understanding the brilliance of movies these days. I used to have a pretty good understanding before (or I think I did), but I have totally lost it.
Ok, so back to the movie. Let me begin by saying that I love the MI franchise. Watched the series before any of the movies, loved what Brian De Palma did with the first movie, the intense, the mystique, the action. Rest of the movies I found very (VERY) entertaining (except perhaps John Woo's interpretation which was a little bit too much... well... John Woo). And the common denominator for all the movies was an intriguing story: they got an Impossible Mission that was to be handled by a team whose only imagination set the limits on how to complete it. It was cunning, well thought through and thrilling.
And then this... so disappointing... Well the action was there, the entertainment was there, but that was it. The story sucked so bad I even found myself uncomfortable watching this. I sometimes looked down on my phone during the movie just to avoid hearing any more of the plot of the movie. The dialog between the characters was even worse, one cliché after another. And a lot was said during the movie that was so obviously "over scripted" that it lost all meaning and feeling. While I was watching I actually found myself playing with the thought: what would the dialog look like if the characters were not allowed to use the words "entity", "key" and "AI"? (we probably could shorten the movie by an hour or so). Jokes aside, it was not the experience I was hoping for. Probably will see the follow up, but only when out on streaming.
Hoping for a new retake of the MI franchise in the future cause this was not good...
The Wrong Missy (2020)
It was quite funny!
Read som bad reviews before and therefore I didn't even bother to see the movie in the beginning when it came out. But coincidentally I saw a clip from the movie on youtube and got me intrigued so I had to see it. And it was hilarious from time to time! My girlfriend even asked what I was looking at because of the the laugh-out-louds. The movie was definitely underrated. Perfect match between David Spade and Lauren Lapkus. My biggest disappointment was Rob Schneider, who usually is very funny (...god, I miss the Deuce Bigalow-movies...), but the role he played in this movie was confusing and hard to find funny. But Lauren Lapkus is a rising comedy star!
Andor (2022)
Finally, a SW series with actual scripting
People are saying that the episodes are boring... and I can imagine what they were visioning before the began watching. BUT it's something called "story" (please look it up, it's something that were an important part of movies or series in the earlier days).
Now, it took Andor three episodes just to get off the planet.... (THREE episodes!). In Mandalorian or Boba Fett that would have been 10 minutes of one episode. And that's what I like with this series, it has a "story", it's building up events, it has feeling... it doesn't just cram in 30 minutes of pointless brawling, lifeless characters and CGI. I for one is so sick and tired of that. And I like how it's building up events that will result to Rogue One, one of the best SW movies out there. Way to go Disney!
Death on the Nile (2022)
I liked it
This movie is getting far too many bad reviews. "Branagh is making too many changes", "does not follow the book", "old movie better"... yadi yadi ya. Imagine actually following the book och even worse, redoing Peter Ustinovs movie (which I loved by the way... but it was made 1978 (!)). Sorry folks... you would have walked out of the theater (or couch) even before the first murder. It couldn't be done in 2021. The script and the director made something new and modern, which is better suited for todays audience. It wasn't an awesome movie, but it couldn't have been made much better.
The Whole Truth (2021)
Quite good actually...
I thought the movie was too long with unnecessary side tracking stories. Acting was not very good and sometimes a bit too exaggerating. But the more of the movie I saw the more I liked it and in the end the pieces fell into place. To sum it up, it was perhaps more a drama than a horror movie, but I enjoyed the movie and it was NOT a waste of time.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
You're missing the point...
I think the movie was very good and it really touched me. And I don't agree with the other reviews and the bad rap this movie got... at all. Most of the reviewers are complaining about unanswered questions, and here I think you are missing the point of this movie. It's not about what happened to Earth or K-23... that's irrelevant. If you want to know what happened to Earth perhaps you should instead see the upcoming prequel "K-23 and Earth: the answers" (I ensure you, that movie wont be made... ever).
The movie was about an old man trying to warn the unsuspecting crew of a spaceship, and that's it!... That's the point. And it was beautiful scripted, nice dialog, stunning movie fx and very good music. Forget about the answers, just enjoy the movie as-is.
