Slow Horses (2022)
Not bad - 6.5/10
This is not a bad show, but it's too comedic to be classed as a real Spy Thriller. I read someone call this 'the best TV spy series' which is quite absurd to say the least. The show is OK for a less serious watch, but really lacks any real depth or substance to captivate actual emotion. I found myself losing interest or being too bothered about what actually happens during most episodes. Almost every scene someone is trying to be overly funny or silly & it just takes away the ability to feel a real connection towards the characters.
The majority of the acting is very comedic, surface level stuff - I can't think of a single scene out of all three seasons which has captured any raw emotion or award winning performances, although I'd probably say the best performance throughout the series was from Saskia Reeves (Standish). But if you compare the acting to some of the performances from the likes of Homeland, The Americans, The Bureau; then Slow Horses falls far short.
If you want a more serious & realistic Spy series with an insight into how actual espionage works without mostly fighting shooting & explosions, I'd recommend watching the French series 'The Bureau', which is miles ahead of this.
True Detective: Night Country: Part 1 (2024)
Is this the same show?
Seriously, 15 mins into the first episode I had to double check I was watching 'True Detective' & not mistakenly pressed on the wrong show. Shockingly bad low budget CGI, cheesy & predictable acting. Unrealistic & almost comedic scenarios, bordering on the line of dark humour. Not to mention the odd paranormal twist this has taken? Bizarre.
I'm all for a woman lead, I'm not a fan of people always turning reviews political, but as others have mentioned, they'd made every male role in this episode to almost resemble Doofus & the lead female characters almost Chuck Norris like, is quite laughable.
I didn't have my expectations too high, but unfortunately it doesn't look too promising for the season & way below what I even expected. Looks like this will be the end of what was a classic series.
Succession: Living+ (2023)
Most Satisfying Episode of The Season
This was the best episode of the season for me, and for the first time in a long time I pretty much smiled through the whole episode. I've loved this season so far but most episodes have been super awkward (in a good way), sad & intense.
This episode felt like everyone finally getting their act together. Roman taking charge, Tom being a bit more in control with Shiv & her slowly letting her guard down with him, and of course Kendal taking charge of the ship.
I've always been team Kendal, so to see him finally coming out on top in this episode & prove doubters wrong, was really satisfying. His speech had me sold!
I absolutely loved that end scene of Kendal entering the sea, it felt like it could've easily been the series finale for me leaving it ending on a high note. I really hope things don't turn out too bad for Kendal, although with a few episodes left still I am slightly nervous for what they have in store for him!
The Northman (2022)
No emotion
Went to watch this for my love of anything to do with Vikings/History. Absolutely love The Vikings / Last Kingdom & was expecting a similar experience, albeit a more cinematic one.
The cinematography was great, some beautiful visuals & sound effects were top notch. Loved the old Norse chanting & music. But that's about as good as it got for me..
Unfortunately I felt nothing towards any of the characters. There was no real development build up to make me as a viewer feel any empathy towards anyone in that show, even with it being so gruesome.
Too many weird rituals, trying a little bit too hard to be 'artsy' although I understand this is the directors style - just wasn't too my taste.
Would avoid wasting money & cinema.
