The Loneliest Runner (1976)
It sticks in my head.
This is one of those movies I've never forgotten. It's been stuck in my head since I saw it a long time ago. The agony of a child being embarrassed by his mother for wetting his bed, when he so desperately wanted to stop, is a heart-breaker.
How many times have we, as parents or just people, criticized another person without thinking of how our criticism can hurt? Maybe it's something the person can control and maybe it's not. But our criticism can last and hurt for years, as has my memory of this movie.
I don't remember if the mother in this film took her child to a doctor. Even if she had, she wouldn't have gotten much help. Fortunately now, medical science can relieve the problems of bed-wetting in adolescents and adults with a simple nasal spray of the hormones lacking in the person, hormones which shut down the kidneys when sleeping.
Ben Casey: Smile, Baby, Smile, It's Only Twenty Dols of Pain (1966)
Excellent test of pain
I remember this episode well, as it showed a woman (Dana Wynter) who was experiencing extreme pain in her face. The doctors (Casey, I presume), tested her level of pain by exerting pressure on her leg. When she reacted to the pain in her leg, they could measure the amount of pain in her face. The only remedy was to sever the nerves in her face, alleviating the pain but leaving her with no muscle control on one side of her face.
It was ten years later that my mother also experienced this face pain, caused by seizures in the trigeninal nerve, also called tic delaroux. My mother had brain surgery (then experimental) which totally resolved the problem.
But I will never forget watching my mother in so much pain. Nor will I forget this episode of Ben Casey.
The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996)
A really romantic and funny film
I'm not particularly a Streisand fan, but I really liked this movie. It has an old style of subtle humor that somehow ends up in a belly laugh here and there. The premise is one that probably makes it a "chick flick", but even macho guys should be touched by the romantic feelings it conveys. This one is a keeper.
