Fear of Clowns (2004)
poorly done
this was one of those movies that you go out and take a chance in the video store. You see a b-movie that you've never heard of with a cool box and cool title. Then you get home, hoping you've found yourself a gem, but when you pop it in your DVD player you realize you have to reach for the Ben & Jerry's to stave off the depression. From the novice acting, to the bad writing to the cheesy special effects... everything was just plain bad. Even right down to something I never even notice... the editing. There are some downright noticeably bad cuts that boggle the mind. I listened to a little of the audio commentary and the director kept talking about how much attention they paid to the audio, but I never once heard him voice his production concerns about any visual aspects i.e. poor lighting, amateur camera angles. Stay away from this one.
The 8th Plague (2006)
You'll either love it or hate it.
Anybody that watches the 8th Plague is either gonna love it or hate it. I don't think there's gonna be any real middle ground here. I know a lot of horror mongers, and that's been the general opinion split. However most of the people I've talked to about this fall under my category... loved it. I can detach myself enough from my opinion to understand why someone might hate this movie, and they're entitled to that opinion. It just totally worked for me. You just don't find too many of these uber-low-budget, truly independent gems on video shelves, but when you do it's a nice feeling. This is quite simply a movie about a lonely girl who loses the one person she cares about. Unfortunately she loses her to the forces of demonic darkness. I felt the whole movie was executed very well from the camera-work to the acting to the scares... and gave horror fans what they paid four dollars for. Renting unknown B-movies can be a truly depressing experience, but not in this case.
