I do not understand the point of this film. Despite the genres being 'Romance, Drama, Comedy' according to IMDB, it is in no way romantic, dramatic or comedic. None of the actors impress and instead of commenting insightfully on cultural differences, it simply trots out old stereotypes. And the irritating Kate Hudson is her usual self, doing her usual aren't-I-cute mugging for the audience. What a waste of a fine cast (bar Hudson), I say! The luminous Stockard Channing and Bebe Neuwirth have absolutely nothing to do.

Disappointing

This could have been a very good psychological drama if not for several things, the most important of them being the lead actor- Casey Affleck. He delivers a one-note performance, wearing the same expression on his face throughout the film. His character is terribly boring, as well. The film should have been focused on Michelle Williams's character (in a great, if brief, performance) as she can actually act and her character has a personality.

The other reasons mostly concern director Kenneth Lonergan. As usual with him, the drama feels oddly inauthentic, the cinematography is uninteresting and there is misplaced and clunky use of classical music.

But usually, he can get the best out of actors. He can't with Affleck, but, in my opinion, that would be like getting blood out from a stone.

Mediocre

Very few laughs, unfortunately. Broderick looked uncomfortable, and DeVito did his usual shtick. His teenage girls were awful! Most of the females were portrayed as bimbos.

Despite being a Christmas film, the Christmas spirit is barely anywhere to be found (despite the usual 'Christmas isn't about materialism' message being shoehorned in at the end) and there are several oddly crude moments that jar with the tone of the rest of the film (can anybody say 'Santa babies'?). It doesn't work on any level, really.
