Well, I admit I was a little curious about this film when I learned that Emma was nominated for another Oscar. I finally gave in and watched it after she won. What a wonderful, weird little film this was.
Emma definitely was worthy of her Oscar. Her portrayal of Bella Baxter will probably be one of the most memorable and profound female performances in a film for me. She certainly stays with you long after the credits have rolled. Bella is somewhat of an animated puppet, a woman brought back from suicide by a brilliant scientist and saved with her own unborn child's brain. Does it sound completely mental? Yup. It is. It only gets more mental from there on in, too.
Childlike and unsure of the world outside having been sheltered by Godwin (who she calls God) , Bella finally discovers sexual pleasure and goes onto a voyage of self-discovery that is both disturbing and thrilling to watch. Determined to grow into herself and become an independent woman away from the patriarchal society desperate to hold her back and control her, Bella proves that even in her fragile state she can become the woman she always wanted to be.
It's an incredibly uncomfortable watch at times, and the sex is well. Plenty. If you're not into soft porn, maybe this isn't for you. However, I must stress that I personally wouldn't allow yourself to be put off by the amount of sexual content because the cinematography is stunning, the costumes wonderful, and the acting from the main players truly breathtaking. Mark Ruffalo gives a terrific performance as the pitiful and woefully in love Duncan (he's a misogynistic control freak but in his own weird way, you can see he truly feels for Bella when he discovers she has been giving her body to other men) and I honestly cannot imagine another actor doing as good a job. It was certainly a demanding role to take on and I think he really did it justice. His chemistry with Emma Stone was top notch too, I hope they do more films together. I have always been a fan of Willem Dafoe and his Godwin Baxter was greatly entertaining to watch, if not easy due to the hideous facial scars (apparently he spent hours in the make up chair beforehand).
I have seen many poor reviews of this film from people who think it's a pornographic mess. I feel like while they are certainly entitled to this opinion, maybe they just didn't understand the point of the film. It wasn't about a woman brought back from the dead to have sex with any man that would have her. It was about a woman taking control of her own destiny and becoming empowered in a world and era where men were the primary dominant force.
See it. It's absolutely mesmerising and I guarantee it will have you feeling some type of way, and that is always a good thing. It's done it's job.
Sheer brilliance.
