Hit-Monkey (2021)
Monkey See. Monkey Do. And do it very well.
MONKE. Man oh man. This show hits all the right spots. Action, gore, humor it's all there. Crazy how they turned the Daniel Way creation into a series. It's a breeze to watch. Bingeworthy!
This is just the kind of work I was waiting for. The Archer-y animation style meets John Wick works surprisingly well for this show.
Is there anything as too much Jason Sudeikis? Not for me. Everything about this show is so bizarre and yet that's exactly why it works.
Very cool. MONKE.
Eternals (2021)
A nice change of pace for MCU.
First of all - The visuals of this movie is breathtaking. Trippy, epic, magnificent grand, add any adjective it'll fall short. It is unlike any Marvel movie in terms of the scope and grandeur. On an IMAX screen it's truly an amazing experience.
This movie misses the mark a lot of things-the pacing and length being the most obvious.
But the parts it hits right outweigh the misses. The casting is top notch. At no point it felt like SJW cash-grab, each character had a distinct role. The performance is what holds a lot of the scenes and the jokes from falling flat (yep it goes there), and the chemistry between the cast feels organic - during the dramatic scenes and fight sequences. Marvel always gets the casting right for sure.
The background score by Ramin Djawandi is amazing.
This movie touches on a lot of topics and some things go really well. The timeline hopping narrative. Historical fiction blending with the Celestial mythos. The fight sequences have good CGI. It's not a PS2 game. The CGI is actually really good.
The film feels like it starts a lot of things and takes it nowhere but the path it does tread are done well. Zhao's touch is the most prominent in this journey of these characters.
And now as a comics fan watching Jack Kirby's name and to see his work on such grand display is enough to get me satisfied. The work he did is still relevant and creating new trajectories in the MCU, it is a delight to see. This movie may not be the best MCU entry, but there is also no other movie like this in the franchise. It has a a heart. It has it's faults and that's why it's a good movie. In a way this movie is like Druig's description of Humans. Worth watching for sure.
Star Wars: Visions (2021)
Have a bad feeling about this? Well it's a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
This is a non-cannon anthology series made by Japanese anime studios done more like experimental presentation of SW. Don't cry THIS ISN'T STAR WARS! Just take it as it is.
There is some amazing animation and art styles here. Thoroughly enjoyable. Since it's non-cannon the creators explore and create some unique stories and yes it IS an anime and different from the cannon work but it also has a lot of the themes from SW just presented in a different style. And this why it feels so fresh. If you're a fan and treat the work as it is you'll enjoy it. Some episodes shine, and some average. The runtime are short so it gets straight to the action. The dialogues seem a bit off sometimes and stories feature a lot of JEDI stuff, almost all and then there's the action of anime style hack and slash but it's good fun overall.
Really interesting take. Watch with an open mind. It's no Luke Han and cannon story but it shines it it's own right.
America: The Motion Picture (2021)
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED !
Finally a movie that is true to its source material. This movie shows the events exactly how it happened. Probably the most accurate depiction. I'm amazed at how the makers pulled it off. This is most faithful adaptation of History in history.
But I am removing 1 star because they used RTJ songs in the background which is kind of inaccurate for the setting of the movie.
Other than that. This the real deal.
No Sudden Move (2021)
Don't let the title fool you. A lot of Sudden Moves happen in the movie.
Boy was it good to see Brendan Fraser on screen again!
That being said, it's a well crafted movie. Soderbergh doing what he does best. Amazing cast and performance. Engaging plot. The pacing falls at places, second half. Odd stylistic choices, weird fish eye lens, Dutch angles. But overall enjoyable crime thriller.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Well made Zombie Action flick. Nothing too extraordinary. Worth a watch.
It's a Zombie Action Heist Mashup. The plot holds up with the twist turns, some hit and miss, still keeps things going over the runtime.
Surprised to see Bautista's performance, in a good way. Rest of the cast does what the script demands.
Some amazing visuals, as expected from a Snyder movie. Good CGI too. Junkie XL delivers yet again with an amazing score. And the soundtrack and sound choices for the movie were great.
Now the Zombie part of the movie is where all the grandeur of a Snyder film is at. And it goes all out. Full gore fest. Guns and explosion. It's all there.
Judge it for what it is. It's a solid zombie flick. Nothing too extraordinary, has some weak points. But it delivers on all the Zombie action heist front and then some.
I enjoyed it.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
A GREAT MOVIE. NEED A SEQUEL
WHY DID WE NOT GET THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE??!!
IT IS EPIC!
Story - Although at it's core it's the same story as the 2017 version. The way is presented is a treat to watch. Snyder is blending mythology with superhero stories (like the fight in Chapter 2). There is a strong backstory for Cyborg. The Flash is a fleshed out character. The villain is not a bore. And it's not some "dark" movie where superheroes team up, crack jokes out of nowhere and fight the guy and done like the 2017 version. You root for the heroes. The right balance.
Visuals - The cinematography is stellar, consistent tone. NO RED SKIES. VFX at places are amazing (Steppenwolf) given the team did this in such a short time during the pandemic. Some places it's a bit off. Also the aspect ratio, which I personally did not have a problem with. And you get the usual Snyder-esque shots and then some.
Music - One of the strongest achievements, Junkie XL much like Snyder's style of blending elements does an amazing job with the soundtrack. Mixing the electronic and cinematic classical elements creating an EPIC soundtrack. Especially the Flash sequence in Chapter 6.
Now I get a lot of people will have problem with the aspect ratio and the runtime. But personally I enjoyed every minute of it. Could've been shorter but there's room to breathe and slow down before the film goes all guns blazing by the end.
Ultimately this is a vastly superior cut and a well made movie. Respect to Chris, Will and Zack. You can see Snyder poured his heart and soul into bringing this to life, and it is one of his best works till date. Needs a sequel.
Also want more of Deathstroke (looking at you - cancelled Gareth Evans movie).
Fans have made this movie possible. They enjoyed it, I enjoyed it.
You do you.
