Two Girls on Broadway (1940)
Wow!
I never realized what a fabulous dancer Lana Turner was until I saw this movie. She was only 19 years old and gorgeous. What a pleasure to watch her dance with George Murphy. The story line was typical for its day but the dancing was really special. I never tire of watching Fred and Ginger but Lana Turner in this movie was just as terrific. I always thought of Lana as a so-so actress who tended to over act. She should have done more dancing and less of the Maddam X and Peyton Place roles. I had a new appreciation for her after seeing this movie and her wonderful dancing. Too bad the "Academy" doesn't give an "Oscar" for dancing.
Titanic (1997)
pu!
What a stinker! I know that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a private club and only members can vote for Oscars. We, the viewing public, buy our tickets and have our opinions. I have watched the Oscars show on TV since they first let us in on their big night. It is fun to watch the show and hope for our favorites, but it is not a peoples' choice award show. I have been disappointed many times and happy many times with the winners of the coveted prize. But never so disappointed and shocked at the the winning of 11 Oscars for "Titanic" One Oscar for special effects, maybe, but the other 10, ridiculous. The blue heart.. Yikes! I can't understand how anyone other than girls between the ages of 10 and 12 could have liked this awful movie.
In the Bedroom (2001)
Great acting......But
I expect Sissy Spacek and and Tom Wilkinson to give good performances. Marisa Tomei should have diction lessons. I guess realism is not combing the ladies hair throughout the movie. The pregnant pauses and halting dialog was painful, not poignant. The title: "In The Bedroom" the countless times we view sleeping heads and non sleeping heads. Being real does not mean entertaining or poignant. I bet Sissy Spacek could have done a 15 minute scene brushing her teeth and emoting in the mirror for us. Real....maybe, thought provoking.....NOT. Entertaining....never. The "Black-O-Vision" segment was irritating at best, not brilliant cinematography. This movie reminded me of "Ordinary People" very ordinary but it won the Oscar for Best Picture. But so did "Titanic" Yuck. This was an OK movie...not great.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)
Really funny
I saw this movie at the theater when it came out in 1958 and liked it.But I was 17 years old then. I just saw it on TV after almost 50 years and PE-EU. I never read the book. I,now, know why Tennessee Williams hated the movie. I just think it ranks right behind "Mommy Dearest" as one of the best unintentional comedies, ever on film. The phony southern drawls...Yikes! Could they have picked a homelier actress to-play Sister Woman to contrast the gorgeous Liz Taylor? I don't think so. I would like to see the out-takes. The cast must have been breaking up over the dialog. The actors were great in playing it with straight faces. A heaping helping of ham and corn, southern style. When I read the comments that praise this awful movie, I think of the "emperor's new clothes". I do love watching with someone and overacting the lines together as we do with "Mommy Dearest". Are you sure it wasn't directed by Ed Wood?
