The Subterraneans (1960)
Untrue to beatnik culture
Tasteless adaption of a great beat novel. The big MGM studio setup is not suited for a story like this. A low budget B/W Noir style, would have suited the story better.
Joe Kidd (1972)
Above averidge
I decided to see this film because of two things; Sturges & Eastwood.
I really liked "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral", and once again Sturges maked an O.K. but not fantastic western. The characters of this movie is not as fantastic steriotyped as the on in "Once upon a Time in the West" - but then agian who are?
"Joe Kidd" is Clint Eastwoods return to westerns from the Dirty Harry secual, and luckuly Joe Kidd is not as bitter as Harry Callahan. The good old charming Clint is back, and the chicks love it; aften talking to Duvall's girl for about 30 seconds Kidd kisses her wich makes her ask how long he has been in jail - he answers someting like: "For two days - it it had been two months we woundn't have been talking this long"(!).
The plot is classic; lonely gunman teams up with bad guy(Duvall), changes his mind and goes against the bad guy. Classic and good. Just like the ending contains one funny detail.
7/10
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)
A family tradegy? (contain spoilers)
I have not read or seen the play, but since it have established itself as a true classic I saw this movie with great expectations and was truelly impressesed. The plot at first not that exciting; the family emperer is dying and the family is fighting for the dollars. But it still turns out very well, partly because of the always fantastic Paul Newmann and Elisabeth Taylor performing great as well. During the film we get to know not one or two but severial caracters, and they all seem credible. The pace of this film is nice an flow, and it contains no special tricks. Exept on in the ending where we see the older son looking up to big daddy - or is it Citizen Kane? Everybody get to face their demons, and the ending is sort of happy, but not in a corny Hollywood way. We get to travel a long distance with the persons - an inner travel.
This is a 10 - excellent!
