Ben Is Back (2018)
This isn't about drug addiction, it's about being a mother
I watched this with my mom by chance and I'm thankful I did so. I strongly recommend everyone to do the same.
Maybe it's a little corny and a weak story for a guy like me but there's nothing bad about feeling what a mother feels all the time for just an hour and three quarters.
Maybe it will be good to understand what moms have to deal with. I'm sure I did. Understand this carrying and protective instinct they have, they would do anything to protect her son, just like Julia Roberts.
Nobody (2021)
If you're looking for Saul Goodman, look elsewhere
I only saw this because of my previous love for the´better call saul´series and it almost ruined it. If you are like me, you have to completely erase the image of Bob Odenkrik you have, just like he did for two years to focus on this character.
For this genre of film, you should get what you expect, a whole lotta bodies dropping with spontaneous great laughter moments alongside an average story.
I liked the character development but it lacked an introduction and an ending. I was a little confused at the beginning. I thought it was going to be a completely different movie at first, and the end didn't give much of a sense of closure either. Maybe it's for the best that way.
Contratiempo (2016)
This is my number one recommendation to all my friends
These European Netflix (and other) productions just keep on getting better and better. Watching stuff like this just makes me excited for the future of cinema, outside Hollywood.
If you haven't watched, just go! This is one you should jump headfirst without knowing anything, and you shouldn't get your hopes up to much, it´s not the greatest of all time
If you have, The only negative part is that I can never watch it again for the first time
I could argue that I spotted some inconsistencies or that I saw it coming but, in fact, I would just be lying to myself to feel smart, I was "no way'ing" until the very end, keeping me on the edge of my sofa.
And it's also in Spanish as a bonus
Brilliant.
Knives Out (2019)
A perfect example of a well-told mysterious story, but nothing new
Having Daniel Craig as the major master-mind that is here to solve the mystery took a huge part in the success of this movie, but it didn't save for the lack of depth in the solution for the more critic, but for me, it was enough. It is the most that could possibly be squeezed out of this story and it should be an example of how to this type of story so the average person gets it, a classic. But maybe a double mind-blowing turn would hurt? I couldn't know for sure.
Variações (2019)
The favourite treat for those who are open-minded, a portuguese masterpiece
I wouldn't consider myself a movie person. However, I have to admit that I was recently really impressed by a movie I saw while flying on vacation. I might even say this was one of the best movies I have ever seen. But what made this film so special?
The film in question is called António Variações, a story portraying the real-life scenarios that the artist who goes by the same name lived almost a century ago. His real name was António Ribeiro, a musician who was described by many critics as "much ahead of his time", so much so that his music still plays on the radio to this day.
It's normal to assume that, because he died many years ago, once the music started playing in the film's background, the spectator would almost instantly recognize the music but not the artist. But, by the end of the film, not only did I knew all his little life details, but I also built a deep connection and understanding of the lyrics in his songs.
Like me, I bet that all the viewers could connect to some extent to Antonio's work and life. This story had me so addicted, in fact, that I couldn't stop listening to Antonio's music during my vacation.
Overall, it's a well-crafted film that has one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard that touches an uncommon but nonetheless interesting topic. I would certainly recommend this masterpiece to anyone, especially if you enjoy music and culture, this could be a very eye-opening story.
