Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities (2022)
Fan of Pan's Labyrinth, but not this
I agree with another reviewer who said that this show was not for adults. It does indeed seem childish and often ridiculous. There is a fakeness and half baked-ness about it. As a concept it is not original, but it is attractive, but the delivery is disappointing and full of silly clichés. Could've reacted differently in the 80s or 90s, but we've come a long way since then. Pan's Labyrinth set the bar high, and perhaps it's not fair to compare apples and oranges...As an adult I find the series too childish. The one episode I liked was the one with the unpopular woman trying anything to change herself, as it speaks the truth about how blind one can become and how upside down one's values can turn due to peer pressure. The first was promising, but fell short in the end, second was cartoonish and ridiculous, 'Autopsy' not bad.
LE: Changing the score to 7, as I loved The murmuring, too. Sensitive and beautiful.
Ostatnia wieczerza (2022)
Surprisingly good!
Being the month we're in, I thought it would be a movie to add to the watch list. I felt like taking a break from Cabinet of curiosities, which is good, but gives a deja vu feeling (Tales from the crypt, anyone)...and stumbled across this one. It manages to create a really dark atmosphere, it has a plot that keeps you interested, a twist or two, and quite an original (to me) finale. Quite a surprise, for a movie I expected to switch off after a few minutes of checking it out. A good Halloween treat, with interesting and unseen before visual effects. Worth watching. I picked the English dubbing and if felt a bit off, but dubbing always does, doesn't it.
L'incruste (2004)
C'mon, it's a nice comedy
It was fun to watch and plenty of eye candy. Perfect for a weekend night when you feel like some light entertainment. I like French comedies and this one didn't disappoint.
The Sinner: Part VI (2020)
Intense and thrilling
I think some of the bad reviews come from people who don't understand the thought processes of conflicted, traumatized personalities...There is a lot of philosophy and a lot of self-seeking involved... The detective and the teacher connect at some level and I understood/felt their bond and their angst. Harry is not your usual detective. He's deeply troubled and therefore the decision of doing what he did is not that surprising. He did have to gain Jaimie's trust. The paper could've been zero if Jamie decided to deny writing it or to say that he wrote it under duress. Harry wanted to establish a bond and eventually record a confession. But Beyond Harry's rational decision of doing all in his power to forge /fake a connexion in order to squeeze a confession, a true bond exists between the two regardless of them being on opposite sides of the law.
Dark Places, Deadly Illusions (2021)
Insultingly bad
So bad it's insulting. Bad plot, bad acting, incredibly bad bad bad. A waste of money making it and a waste of time watching it.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
A true classic
A classic gem. A memorable piece of cinematography with an enormous amount of charm. A superb leading actress, stunning score, magical lighting.
Intouchables (2011)
