Vengeance (2022)
interesting concept, good dialogue, absolutely atrocious filmmaking
By golly, this is some of the worst shot composition I have ever seen. Multiple shots in which half the frame is out of focus and im so confused by some cuts and choices technically. Fine besides that, nothing great, but not well made, yeesh.
Better Call Saul: Fun and Games (2022)
fun and games
This episode is a collection of our favorite characters experiencing the aftermath of all the "fun and games" they just concluded. Understanding the importance of the title as it pertains to the characters in this episode is important in understanding why the writers show us certain things, and don't show us others.
In particular, this is the first time throughout all of breaking bad;better call saul that we see gustavo fring genuinley content, enjoying his wine, enjoying conversation. Of course this is abruptly ended when gus realizes that this isn't his life, he's too far gone to prosper about the life that he could have, he's in the game, and the funs over. We see mike attempt out of his own good to explain to nacho's father what happened. Through nacho's father mike sees a representation of himself, and also his son. He's see good, a man who's never been lead by "revenge" as he says it, a man who is in all aspects; is not made for this universe, who is not in the game. However, he is also a father who has lost his son, something mike can relate to. What mike sees in nacho's father is what he wishes he could've been for his son. Kim and Jimmy being the most important representation of this. I think the final line about how she didn't want to break up because she was having "too much fun". We get a 12 second shot of the back of saul's neck and boom, we are in breaking bad. I say saul here because after this conversation, there is no more jimmy. Kim was the only thing keeping that part of him alive. The jumpcut is the perfect representation of this split within his life. The many lines throughout this episode when rich refers to his as "jimmy, sorry saul" or when kim said "I have had so much fun with you". She also only refers to him as jimmy throughout this entire scene. The only thing that was keeping him from turning into the man we see, was her. The expression "fun and games" is a finite expression. It's a bittersweet phrase that implies an end, that it was all just fun and games, but things end, and life moves on. We get long lingering shots of mike, gus, and saul all as they are forced to revert back to their lives, which for two of them we know the fateful outcome of. This universe is dark, and this episode acted as an aftermath of the events previous, while also acting as a conclusion and truly showing us that even through everything that has happened, life will move on one way or another. Jimmy and kim had their fun, and they played their games, but life moves on, and it's seemingly left behind jimmy. Can't wait for the rest of the season. This show is AMAZING.
