American Horror Stories: Game Over (2021)
What was that?
This story kind of capitalizes on the cliche many horror fans hate: the dream within a dream sequence. I could say it's more nuanced than that, but really it's just a sloppy take on the troublesome trope. Decent acting does nothing to help salvage a story that seems to go nowhere. And by the end, I just found myself asking what happened? Overall, it's an incoherent mess.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Flawed, but enjoyable
It was great to see some familiar faces that spanned much of the franchise together in one scene. The climactic and expected battle was decent enough, yet it seemed to borrow heavily from other films in the series. The cast did good with what they were given to work with. The Dino action was great, but not as frequent. Some of the dialogue was cringy. There were a lot of cool nods to other iconic moments in the franchise.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021)
Different, but in a good way
This is not the Masters of the Universe I grew up on yet it is. This seems more like a story that serves to bridge the gap between old and new and theatre some surprises on the way. Some seem to not like the new direction but to me it fits with setting up a bigger story. It's a fun series and I look forward to more. Hopefully soon as that was a pretty intense cliff hanger.
Shortcut (2020)
Immensely annoying
The characters do stupid things to advance the plot. The characters range from Luke warm to completely useless. Because of this, the film fails to pack a punch. The scares are benign.
Death to 2020 (2020)
Oh! It goes there!
It takes what we lived through and skewers it meticulously with plenty of dark-humor.
Shadowlands (2018)
Tonally jarring
The first 2 segments of this 3 episode anthology were pretty decent. The heartbreaking love story told in flashbacks was surprisingly touching and the romantic getaway was both steamy and a little mysterious. The first 2 stories had an underlying theme of sadness, the first much more blatant. And then the third story follows and it is nothing like the others, a complete tonal shift that is uncomfortably jarring. It's an attempt at camp but it seems that fails, mostly because none of the actors are convincing. The story had potential but it doesn't fit with the subtly of the other 2 and suffers from bland acting and bizarre follow through.
Stonewall (2015)
As far as love letters to LGBT community goes... no
I'm seeing reviews that decry all the negative reviews because this movie was awesome. This movie was a cringe-inducing mess. The Filmmakers indicated it was supposed to be about Stonewall but they retconned the history (which could be a fascinating movie with very little embellishment) and refashioned it as some white-savior motivational flick. That, unfortunately isn't its biggest problem. The biggest problem is how pretty much every gay character in this film is portrayed in some sort of predatory fashion, something the community has tried to distance itself from over the years. And yet, this 'love letter' gets it wrong and claims to be representative. Overall, the movie is a large-scale mess. And it isn't even a lovingly crafted one at that.
9-1-1: Lone Star: Yee-Haw (2020)
The D word. No, the other D word.
Just like the core show this spin-off hails from, this one has a lot going for it. It most certainly isn't going to please a lot of people. Personally, I like the diversity. And the way the stereotypes are played to in one over-the-top encounter is comical and mildly sad. This episode certainly has a liberal appeal to it, not going to lie. And since I'm a liberal, it appeals to me.
Suicide Squad (2016)
Colorful and darkly decent fare
It isn't a great film but it does a good job of fixing the things Batman vs Superman got wrong, namely bringing in a bit of humor. The film doesn't take itself too seriously but seriously enough that it nestles neatly into the franchise DC is building. It's well cast with both Margot Robbie and Viola Davis chewing the scenery with grand extravagance. Jared Leto, donning the Joker mantle this time around, does a fantastic job even though it is ultimately the outlandish appearance of the character that cheapens his performance greatly. The special effects are mostly excellent but there are a few points where it is clearly CGI (not really a bad thing). Perhaps the most glaring flaw is the villains central to the plot. The collection of squad members, save for Smith's Deadshot, seems to be a mish mash thrown together with no genuine thought. The antagonist is also vastly underdeveloped though still entertaining.
