Full River Red (2023)

Excellent Movie

Watched this movie only knowing it is some kind of detective movie. It was interesting with lots of twists and turns.

It does throw me off a little as for the direction the movie is going for. It is littered with comedic parts but it is in no way a light hearted movie. The movie in general has surprisingly quite serious/violent scenes thrown in with many emotional deaths. It ends with a patriotic tribute to General Yue Fei as the title would suggest.

In summary, I enjoyed the movie and its twists. Some complains would be the music when they are walking between places is a bit loud and annoying. Secondly, the tone of the film does feel a bit weird to me as it is trying to be both comedic and serious at the same time and not juggling it as well as I would like. Overall a good movie and helps give viewers a little awareness that there was an important historical figure; General Yue Fei.

Warriors of Future (2022)

Gorgeous But Horrible

Movie looks beautiful. Nice CGI and overall look and costumes. But unfortunately the entire plot is horrible. Story is confusing and a lot of plot points are not properly explained.

For example there is a little girl that magically is found in the ruins and everyone does not appear surprised and acts as if it is expected.

Same goes for some random bug like lifeforms encountered. They didn't expect it but there is no real surprise and appropriate reactions. Like i would expect there should be a greater response back in HQ and some explanation of what the hell these are. Instead everyone just rolls with it.

Scenes are cut incoherently and bad overuse of shaky cam as well.

Excellent Story

First Chinese anime for me. Expected it to be a typical Anime story but boy was I wrong. Story was really good with unexpected twists. Hope there is another season coming.

New Kung Fu Cult Master (2022)

Not as Good as The Classic

I am a big fan of the original Kung Fu Cult Master with Jet Li so was excited to hear of this movie.

Plenty of famous movie stars in this movie.

They even have Donnie Yen but unfortunately he didn't do much.

Overall the movie felt kinda rushed. Don't really connect with the leads and the fight scenes were far better in Jet Li's version.

Edens Zero (2021–2023)

FairyTail In A Different Setting

As someone who has watched FairyTail, this anime is really very close to that with pretty much the same characters merely in a different setting.

Boring for me, but I guess it's OK for people who have never seen FairyTail or just love the same thing in a sci-fi setting.

Snake Eyes (2021)

Snake Eyes Butchered :(

Growing up Snake Eyes was the coolest Joe for me.

This movie does nothing to show that. There's nothing to love about him, in fact he feels like the villain throughout. Action scenes are hard to follow. And there really is no real origin story for the greatest martial artist in the Joes.

Fun Superhero Movie

This is one fun and violent superhero movie that is just entertaining. A nice break from the vast universe of Marvel, this is just a simple fun movie.

Crazy, silly, surprising and hilarious.

Definitely recommended!

Sure no one watches FF series expecting amazing plot, but surely it is now pushing the boundaries of ridiculous. I did enjoy the previous films just as silly action flicks but this one had me sighing in disbelief midway through.

This is an Olympic highlight show I didn't know I needed. Absolutely hilarious coverage of the Olympics. Very casual and funny, feels like I am watching the Olympics with a couple of silly friends.

Jungle Cruise (2021)

Fun jungle cruise indeed. Good old Indiana Jones style adventure. Great family friendly film and great that it stays true to the spirit of the Jungle Cruise ride. Was worried that they would try too hard and make it more complicated than it needs to be. Silly humor, reasonable plot, likeable actors and off we go on a great adventure!

Insane Ride

Was not familiar with the source material but the end of episode 1 was a super-wtf-I'm-officially-hooked scene. Loved the fight scenes and the plot. Voice acting was just ok. Or maybe I'm too used to anime voice acting, it didn't really feel like it has that kinda passion to it. But oh well the plot alone is good enough to keep me hooked.

Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (2021)

Simple Movie

Standard cliche action movie. Not necessarily a bad thing. Keep your expectations down and just enjoy the ride. Interesting that they have a Greek villain with a Mexican accent.

Dynasty Warriors (2021)

Disappointing

Three Kingdoms is a very well known and rich story, and it is surprising to me it has not translated to much big screen success.

Firstly casting here is a bit off the mark for me. These people don't look like warriors to me. More like office people attending a cosplay convention. Guan Yu for example looks like my IT support friend sticking on a fake beard. Hard to believe he is the fearsome warrior of legend. Actually, it's hard to believe he can even grow a beard.

The fight scenes, granted this is from a video game, is a bit too much. Especially the final fight. It's like a bunch of 12-year olds made it up.

The fight with Guan Yu and Hua Xiong is cooler. The lines were badass.

Spiral (2021)

This Is Not The Saw You're Looking For

Since this is part of the Saw franchise, I had some expectations. Well it wasn't met. First of all Chris Rock as a grizzled cop, that didn't work for me. And the whining every time he's at the station about all the cops are bad and corrupt? It's laying it on a little thick. Love the rants though, some are pretty funny.

The twist, well it's kinda obvious.

Overall, i love a little gore and this one has it. But the plot and twist? Mehhhh.

Champion (2018)

Rare Arm Wrestling Movie

Always been a fan of Don Lee so gave this movie a try. Quite an enjoyable movie, though it brings nothing new to the genre. Loads of comedic moments with touches of emotional ones. Sadly no cameos from any arm wrestlers I know.

Typical Action Film

Jason Statham at 53 years of age is still a badass. Less hand-to-hand combat here but still an enjoyable movie. Starts off quick and a little confusing. But then it's explained when we see the action from different perspectives. Still not exactly sure who Jason is suppose to be though.

Fatherhood (I) (2021)

Surprisingly Good

My expectations for this movie was low. I figured it would be another cliche comedy with lousy and plot and cheap jokes.

Turns out this was a surprisingly pleasant ode to fatherhood. Certainly not a laugh out loud comedy but good enough that I was left at the end of the movie with a smile.

Cool Movie

I've been in kind of a Don Lee marathon. He has really been in a lot of badass movies. This one is another one. Very interesting plot. Gangster and cop working together to get a sick killer while trying to outdo each other.

Overall a satisfying movie. I think it was pretty clever how the plot flows together. Loved the ending as well.

Love Me Some Demon Slaying

First off, this is really a continuation from Season 1 of the anime. I do wonder if this works as a standalone movie. Having already watched Season 1, it wasn't a problem for me. Loved the movie, thoroughly enjoyed it. Plenty of action, and plot moves along at a brisk pace. Not too many draggy moments like some animes tend to have, telling grandfather stories from the moment they were a sperm until now. Definitely the apex fight had me at the edge of my seat. Can't wait for Season 2!

Hi, Mom (2021)

Heart Tugging Movie

This is a tribute by director/actor Jia Ling to her mom. It was obviously written with a lot of heart. Thoroughly enjoyable movie with plenty of funny moments. Ending was a heart wrenching moment that makes you wanna run to your mum and hug her.

Infinite (2021)

Waste of an Interesting Premise

Premise was promising, people keeping their memories and skills from past lives. But the movie did not really build extensively on this. I felt it would have been better if individuals had unique skills from their past lives rather than generic better in every way main characters. In the end the movie just becomes another generic action movie. The dodging sniper bullets was a bit over the top. The soul capturing was also quite a stretch. Wouldn't it be more grounded in reality if they were captured and put in permanent stasis or kept alive for a really long time.
