Kick-Ass (2010)

It's better than Deadpool, just bursting at the seams with great energy, imagination and risk taking. Not to mention an unusually intricate plot for superhero movies. I felt like their backstories were stronger than typical superhero films. And it's a master class in editing and pacing. The pace never lags, and there are times that it zooms a few steps ahead of the viewer and patiently waits for us to catch up. Aaron Taylor Johnson, Chloe Grace Moritz and Mark Strong all own their roles, with Strong in particular pulling off the neat trick of being both menacing and funny. Nic Cage has his moments, though I think his stilted superhero delivery while in costume was a poor choice. What I liked best about it is it's a movie that doesn't pull its punches.

The price of salt as a film

I've watched many, many lesbian movies, and sometimes there is a good one, but this is a gorgeous movie with two recognizable stars in that are so talented that I forgot I was watching people act; it felt more like I was peeping in on their lives. The movie is realistic. The sets are remarkable and so well-done, the costumes, make-up, everything suitable for the time frame. Cinematography is gorgeous, and the plot is both suspenseful and thoughtful at the same time. I've been waiting thirty-five years for a producer to take lesbian love seriously, and it has finally happened. Hooray!

Doesn't hold up

You have to see this movie multiple times to understand just how bad it is. I'm all for giving any horror movie a little wiggle room when it comes to believability, but this movie doubles and triples down on the absurd. Like when the perpetrator filled Julie's trunk with a rotting corpse and a thousand slimy crabs. Julie and the gang come back to investigate two minutes later but magically the omnipresent psycho fisherman, apparently aided throughout the movie by otherworldly telepathy, divination and teleportation means, has incredibly restored her trunk to pristine status in a matter of seconds, in a crowded neighborhood and in broad daylight no less. Freddy Krueger himself couldn't have pulled it off. Jennifer Love Hewitt is abysmal at portraying the innocent minded empath ( yet ironically this seems to be her typecast, LOL). Freddie Prinze Jr.'s acting was just as bad. On a positive note, I think the Buffy woman did a good job. All of the characters were stereotypical, but with her role they did a great job showing how life turns out for beauty queens after their happy days peak.

Phenomenal mystery

Amazing mystery movie that keeps you guessing. DON'T TALK TO ANYONE WHO HAS SEEN IT. Don't even watch the trailer. Just know that there is a twist in the movie, and the less you know, the more you will enjoy it. Not to say that its completely unwatchable a second time with you knowing the twist. In fact, with a second viewing you may notice things you never noticed before. And watching this with those who have never seen it before can be quite a hoot. Some may look and the run time and cringe, but trust me this movie will suck you in and you will be completely engrossed. But I will warn you, don't watch this for date night, especially if you are on the outs The acting is surperb, the screenplay is amazing (and written by the same woman who wrote the book) and David Fincher is the perfect director for this movie.
