Jury Duty (2023)
Wonderful, sweet, wholesome, funny, you root for the main guy until the end
Though some may feel like it's a little slow and drawn out, the show is ultimately well worth the watch with the last episode being the best. First of all, whoever cast Ronald, the main character, couldn't have picked any better. If it had been anybody else, this premise would not have worked as well. Ronald has the most genuine heart and spirit, and it shines through despite him having no idea that he's the only one who doesn't know the whole show is fake. If you want to watch something that is wholesome and sweet with a lot of laugh out loud moments and a very, very touching ending that will restore your faith that there are good people in the world, definitely watch this show.
The Pale Blue Eye (2022)
Henry Melling playing EA Poe is the true star of this movie
The only reason I'm writing a review of this movie is because of Henry Melling's performance which is fantastic and is worthy of some sort of award! He fully embodies Poe with his look, demeanor, voice and mere presence. His emotional range was impressive! The part could not have been cast better! His performance is in stark contrast to Christian Bale's. This is one of the most muted performances of his I've seen, and he is one of my favorite actors. Don't watch this movie for Bale; maybe watch it for the somewhat interesting twist at the end; absolutely watch it to see Melling. I hope to see more from him in the near future!
Savage x Fenty Show Vol. 4 (2022)
Impressive show overall
I haven't seen previous Fenty shows so I can't compare but I give this 7 stars for great choreography, body size diversity, Maxwell's performance, Winston Duke (huge crush) and the clothing really is stellar. On the negative side: Johnny Depp...really? He looked beyond uncomfortable and out of place and his inclusion threw the whole thing off for me. There are other issues with misogyny in a lot of the song lyrics but unfortunately that's expected so it is what it is. Overall, a showcase like this is definitely preferred over a cat walk show and we get to experience and enjoy hundreds of talented dancers and artists.
Spiderhead (2022)
Netflix just needs to stop
Netflix is spending all this money on good actors and producing crappy movies. These actors do their best to do the plot justice but there's not much plot to hold up. Predictable, cliche, boring, laughable really. I'd rather they spend more money making fewer higher quality movies because at this point I'm probably going to stop watching them altogether.
The Old Man (2022)
Not worth the time and mental energy...
A few stars added for great casting and acting, including the wonderful actress who played Zoe, but overall the show is a dud. However, my understanding is that they had to cut the show by three episodes because of Jeff Bridges' health, so maybe it could have ended better. But the pacing was so slow as it was that slogging through another three episodes may have been too much. The ending came to such a screeching halt that I was left very unsatisfied. I hear they're making a second season. I doubt I'll watch it.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
I literally woke up farting
By the time the raccoon was revealed under the cook's toque as if it was a clever other-dimensional manifestation of Ratatouille's Remy, I had checked out of this movie so hard that I fell asleep and woke myself up with a fart. That's how bad this movie was. If that doesn't make sense don't worry, the rest of the movie won't either. I get the underlying "what you focus your love and attention and compassion on will bear meaningful moments and relationships in your life" storyline, but I've never seen it so painfully and sense-assaultingly portrayed in a movie. In that way, yes it's an original and unique movie. But in that and every other way, I literally hated it.
How It Ends (2018)
I stayed up past my bedtime for this crap
I gave it an extra star because the main actor is hot. Otherwise, total waste of time. The dialog is terrible, you never find out what caused the disaster, and it ends like the cameraman just decided to quit his job. Total let down.
After Life (2019)
Touching, poignant, vulgar, real
The only reason I don't give it ten stars is because of some seriously vulgar humor that I eventually had to start skipping over because, ugh, it's so over the top. But I think it's also a glimpse into who Ricky Gervais is, which is a thoughtful and complex and pretty balanced dude. He equally tugs at the heart strings with tender, real life emotion and then plunges into the most depraved jokes through characters who are acting out in the extreme. Aside from those characters, the show was absolutely lovely. It was perfectly cast. I felt a connection with just about every character and cared about what happened to them. He somehow was able to develop each character in short periods of time while still beautifully laying out the whole story of him and his late wife. Even his dad, who didn't get a ton of active screen time, was brought to life between the shots of him in the nursing home and the previous videos of him before the dementia. The ending was sweet and leaves you realizing that life is fleeting, don't let it pass without taking some chances and helping some other people. What really pulled the whole show and story together was the soundtrack, which was stunningly good. Bravo Ricky, this is a show to be proud of.
Black Widow (2021)
Slow start, overall a good movie
I wasn't blown away but I liked the movie overall, even with the slow start. I think the casting was good, especially Florence Pugh, and there were some decently good action/fight scenes. The jail break scene was totally unrealistic but it is a Marvel movie, after all. If you want to continue the story line for the Marvel cast overall this is one not to miss. I've certainly seen some worse iterations of Marvel characters lately.
Ted Lasso: Beard After Hours (2021)
Worst episode of the show
Not knowing Scorsese's After Hours may have been part of what made this episode so flat, boring and ultimately completely unsatisfying. Regardless, the twists and turns were disjointed and completely not believable, and as mysterious as Beard's inner character has been this far in the show, I don't think they did any favors portraying Beard in this light. It didn't endear me to him at all, and such a huge part of this show is exactly how endearing ALL of the characters are in their own ways. I hope this doesn't mean more shows like this will follow...it makes me fear for Nate's true inner character, which hasn't really been revealed yet like they just did for Beard.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Should be rated R for the violence
PG-13? Really?? This movie is so violent I would not want my 13 year old to see it, and you know younger kids will watch it too. It's not the worst movie overall...good action, good effects, etc. The plot isn't very believable but it's fast paced and the acting is good. It just makes me sad that younger and younger kids are exposed to so much violence :(
Cruella (2021)
Disappointing
Both Emma's are great actors in whatever they do so I'm a little surprised why they did this movie. It was predictable and overdone imo. I didn't connect with Cruella at all, despite her backstory. Halfway through I was bored. I don't recommend it at all.
