SAS Rogue Heroes (2022)
Nails it, straight out of the gate.
Many veterans in the world right now are ones that have served/fought in our modern wars. Having a period drama that is strong, well written and a character driven story that doesn't lean into the same old narratives that so many have was refreshing.
The music was a brilliant touch that brought the modern audience into the story with a fist to gut. I saw, going through the reviews, the nuance of the choice was lost on many. I get that they didn't understand the choice, however, when opening our perspective to the vibe they were setting for the viewer, it set it.
My husband is a veteran and during support group meetings with other Vets, SAS Rogue Heroes is getting *water cooler* treatment. Comments such as "it seemed made for them" and "they got it right". Even though these veterans didn't fight in this particular war, there is a shared understanding in many respects, especially for some of those who served in units that jumped out of planes with artillery strapped to them.
Much like Band of Brothers, the connection of what a unit goes through together, including the conflict of personalities, is like a family. That was very much by brought to life by the impeccable acting and direction in this show.
Not mentioning how well cast this show is would be a mistake. There can be a fantastic script, production value and direction but if the cast doesn't work - nothing will. This cast was pure magic! All of them, individually and together. It was equally a pleasure and heartbreaking to watch.
Good Sam (2022)
I thought it was satire...
I was watching and laughing and then a line hit and the mood didn't shift like I expected. I realized then...nope...was not satire. Every time I shifted my perspective to it 'being satire', it was much more believable and enjoyable as such.
There is no way I could take this show seriously. It's like 'Let's take every hospital drama trope/cliché/soundbite and shove it in here and turn it UP!
Normal People (2020)
Transported me
Hearing the voices of some of the critiques and it's easy to see how people forget what it is like to be young and passionate. I don't. Normal People took me back. Lack of communication, mental health with young men, feelings of worth and lack of it in young women from toxic homes...these things don't have to ring true to us to have felt them through Marianne and Connel. And did we ever. I loved every moment of this show and I will watch it all again. I felt like my broken teen self watching it and as much as I never would want to relive that time, it was an intense trip back for a while.
Boys on the Side (1995)
Friendship tester
Watch this movie with a friend. If they laugh, cry and want to hug you when it is over - they deserve to be in your life - if they don't. Friends off.
