Kuang ye san qian xiang (1996)
One hell of a ride!
I didnt really expect much of this movie at first glance. I have watched some of Francoise Yip's previous and later movies (like Black Mask), and i have been a fan of her since i first saw her.
But this movie really did surprise me. It was a thrill ride from beginning to end. I am not gonna reveal anything here that will spoil the plotline (cause its a well worth rental if you can get it).
I give this movie 8 of 10.
Merlin (1998)
Truly fantastic!
I have no idea how many times i have seen this movie now. I have read most of the other reviews of it, be them good or bad. What amazes me the most is that people that give this movie a bad review misses its primary goal, namely to be ENTERTAINING! So, what if its not historically accurate (not that ANY of us has ANY clue as to whether or not Merlin even existed, as he is just a myth). I rarely come by movies that touches my soul in the way that this movie has. It deals with many aspects of life, and its all seen through the eyes of Merlin himself. From he was born, until his reunity with Nimue when he is an old man. I especially liked the ending of it, as it has a beautiful touch to it.
When it comes to the script, it could perhaps have been better. But as for the fact that this is a Made for TV movie, and not a Hollywood Blockbuster, i am very satisfied. Sam Neill makes a truly impressive interpetation of Merlin, as well as Isabella Rossellini in the role of Nimue. The supporting cast is also very great, but the script doesnt give them so much to go on, as we can very much see in the performance of Rutger Hauer. He is perhaps one of the most talented actors on earth, and his performance here is mediocre compared to his previous work (Blade Runner to name one).
Overall, i would truly recommend this movie. As one of the few movies i ever have the pleasure of recommending, as i am fairly hard to impress. Could be because i have a nack for not liking bullshit movies. So if you have the chance, go buy it or rent it on DVD!!!
