Sex and the City (2008)
A nice transition from the small to big screen for this story!
First and foremost, I must let it be known that I am not your typical fan of the show. I have not seen one episode of the show, but I knew months before it debuted that it would a success! This movie evidently completes what the television show failed to do! I believe the title has psychologically taken away what the story is ultimately about, LOVE, told from women's perspective(I'm a man by the way). Which is the reason why I believe that most of the people going to see this movie are women. The movie does have a television feel to it, minus the commercials, but tends to convey the attitudes of the two cities that make up its location, New York and Los Angeles! If you've never been to either one of these cities, then this movie may have felt a bit too indulgent to you. Being a New Yorker, you do get to experience people(especially women) living these type of lifestyles or at least trying to. In a nut shell, the movie is about a successful woman who is telling the story of how she and her girlfriends deal with relationships that they have made for themselves. It's funny and sad at times, but it does deal with the more important things that most of us tend to forget make up a relationship like commitment, honesty, love, and loyalty! Hollywood hasn't been too successful with a lot of their small to big screen projects but I believe they have a winner in this one! I know that this movie has made me want to get the whole series to exactly what made this such a hot and successful story.
Talk to Me (2007)
A "must-see" masterpiece in African-American(Black) cinema!
This movie is a "must see" for all true cinematic fans, especially Black Americans! This true story is about the life of Ralph Waldo Greene, better known as "Petey Greene", a local Washington D.C. deejay who came to prominence in the early 1960's. Don Cheadle gives an Oscar worthy performance as Greene and is supported in his portrayal by an all-star lineup which includes Martin Sheen, Cedric The Entertainer, and Mike Epps. Chitwetel Ejiofor and Taraji P. Henson give noteworthy performances as Greene's manager and love interest respectively. This film will undoubtedly take you back to a time that many Americans would rather forget, the "Civil Rights Era"! Beautifully directed by Kasi Lemmons, this film will take you on an emotional roller-coaster that will eventually leave you cheering the legacy of Petey Greene. The acting is superb and will leave you questioning why more movies of this magnitude are not considered for film's most prestigious award, "The Oscar"! If you like good to great cinema and love history, then this film is definitely for you! I guarantee that you won't be disappointed, trust me!
Mission: Impossible III (2006)
3's the charm!
For those of you who thought that Tom Cruise dropped the ball on "War of the Worlds"(I am not one of those, I happened to like the movie), be ready to see Cruise carry this ball all the way to the bank! The latest installment of this trilogy is the best one! Tom Cruise turns it up another notch in this movie as the missions appear to be more impossible than ever! I do believe that there will be more missions to come after this one, why not, they only keep better and better as time goes on! Cruise is challenged in this movie like no other time within this trilogy! As with most trilogies, you should see the last 2 installments first to get acquainted with the "Mission Impossible" team and how proficient they do what they do. Don't miss this one, you'll regret it! A must-see!!!!!!!!
Poseidon (2006)
Better than the remake!
This remake is better than the original(in my opinion)! Poseidon rocks with energy and action, but not the type of action that would make most crowds cheer, the kind that would make most crowds cry because the action is often tragic in this movie. One can only imagine what these actors had to go through to film the numerous underwater scenes that take throughout the movie! I might get crucified for this one but I enjoyed this movie more than "Titanic"! Poseidon should be well on its way to an Oscar nod(for visual effects) this year! In order for one to get the full effect of this movie, I suggest one to kick out the extra dough and go see this movie in IMAX! You will not be disappointed!
Million Dollar Baby (2004)
"Do not confuse this one with "Rocky"!
This movie is definitely one of the best, if not the best picture(s) of 2004, and probably one the best pictures I have ever seen! This film is surely one of Clint Eastwood's best pictures ever! The chemistry between the powerhouse talents of Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, and Hillary Swank is just extraordinary to say the least! This movie is so full of purpose until it hurts! One of the major components for me in this movie is the fact that it targets boxing from the women's perspective, showing that women's boxing is truly no different than men's boxing just in gender! Hillary Swank gives an unforgettable performance, and in my eyes is a shoo in come Oscar time! A must see for boxing fans and Oscar-caliber film fans alike!
AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)
This should get you to see this film!
Considering its "PG-13" rating, this movie is surprisingly very good! Being that the previous "Alien" and "Predator" movies("Alien", "Aliens", "Alien3", "Alien: Resurrection", "Predator", "Predator 2") were all rated "R", I thought that this movie wouldn't stand up to its predecessors with the "softer" rating! I was wrong! I believe that you have to have seen at least a few of the other movies of both creatures in order to truly appreciate this one(just like "Freddy vs. Jason")! This movie is packed with the action that only these two beings can generate! The best way to enjoy this movie is to pick a side, "Alien" or "Predator" and see if you're happy with your choice at the end! No matter who you choose, you will enjoy the battle! A must see movie for fans of the two creatures! You will not be disappointed, trust me!!!
The Tuxedo (2002)
very funny
I found this film to be one of Jackie Chan's funniest films since the "Rush Hour" films! For the first time in Jackie Chan's film career, his unique fighting ability, that he displays so flawlessly, is attributed to a formal dining ensemble(the tuxedo)! Chan has also showed his uncanny ability to play well on screen opposite just about anyone who is paired with him regardless of race or gender as he does here with the very beautiful and talented Jennifer Love Hewitt! Be prepared for a non-stop romp of laughs as well as Chan's signature arsenal of stunts in this one! Chan and Hewitt deliver the kind of chemistry that might very well land them two a sequel to this film! The special effects come off dazzling and flawless! If you're a fan of Jackie Chan's, then you need to continue to support his efforts with your viewing of this film! You will not be disappointed, I promise you!
Barbershop (2002)
Could've been even better!
This movie for me, fell a little short when it comes to being funny! I believed I laughed once throughout the whole movie! It appears as though blacks in cinema sometimes try a little too hard for the jokes, but the storyline was an uplifting one for black americans! Some of the lines that were said by Cedric The Entertainer's character, has caused some controversy among some black viewers! I personally didn't find this film to be offensive at all! I believe that black americans are sometimes a little too sensitive when it comes to certain realities being played out on the big screen! Ice Cube is continuing to show great promise as a black actor for the millenium! One thing's for certain, whether you liked this movie or not! Barbershop will be a movie that black americans will talk about for years to come! I advise that if you like black movies, you see this one for yourself!
