Soorarai Pottru (2020)
Absolute banger from start to finish.
Sudha Kongara managed to put out two high quality movies with complex characters and emotions.
Suriya is absolutely magnificient in his second best performance so far, right below Vaaranam Aayiram.
The story is at just the right pace, without unnecessary subplots, and fleshed out characters.
The direction, as always, is awesome. Sudha Kongara manages to capture the feel of the struggling entrepreneur in this movie.
Overall, watch it at any chance you get.
Sarpatta Parambarai (2021)
Pa. Ranjith is back with a bang.
After two disappointing ventures, this feels more like Ranjith going back to his roots - a film set in Madras, with characters from underprivileged communities facing life in their own ways, the consequences of their actions, and how they overcome it.
Suffice to say, this movie is one of the best I have watched this year. Arya is absolutely incredible in his role, Pasupathy puts out a rock solid performance, the boxing scenes were accurate enough to be enjoyable, and Pa. Ranjith's words just taste like nectar on the screen.
Overall, I highly recommend this film.
Netrikann (2021)
Not worth it.
The movie just drags on and on and on...
The action and violence are very muted and dull, and don't have that "serial killer movie" feel.
The plot is good enough for you to consider watching it, and bad enough to regret sitting through two and a half hours of this movie. It would've worked better if the movie ended around the 1 hr 50 min mark (where the original film ended). Instead you get half an hour more of a pestering slog of a movie.
Nayanthara is absolutely mediocre in this movie. Not her worst performance, but far from her best.
The main star, Ajmal, was the one who hooked me to the seat, when I would've turned it off after half an hour.
Overall, give it a miss. Only watch it if you have the patience of a saint and want to waste two and a half hours that you can spend on another movie.
Raame Aandalum Raavane Aandalum (2021)
An enjoyable amateur film with a good plot.
The film's strength lies in its portrayal of the characters. The actors do a respectable job here, and the dialogue sounds authentic enough to not notice any goofs.
The story is simple, and doesn't beat around the bush.
Overall, its worth a watch.
Draupathi (2020)
The worst film I have watched.
I don't usually consider films bad, but this one takes the cake. The stunts are horrible, the acting is atrocious, and the main message of this movie at best is very ignorant, and at worst is openly bigoted. It should not come as a surprise that the director was unable to get a producer with such a terrible script.
Much better movies could have been made with the money this movie got.
