Skinamarink (2022)
I've never cried after a film before
That was....truly horrendous to watch. I'm a new dad of an 18 month old so it probably resonated with me in a way it wouldn't have prior to having kids. After the movie I held my baby for almost 45 minutes crying. The cinematography was absolutely unique and captivating.
SPOILERS
the concept itself, children, suddenly in a kafkaesque environment. Their home, but now alien and hostile. No natural light exists. These children do exactly what kids would do. Hover around the TV as the only source of light and comfort. "Can we watch something happy" makes me tear up thing about it. Children who are a utterly powerless suddenly thrust into the domain of a malevolent entity. It made me want to throw up. I've never had a movie illicit such an emotional response from me. 10/10.
Resident Evil (2022)
Plot devices for personalities
I tried to come in with an open mind. I'll set aside being an RE fan. Just the character decision making is brutal. "Let's breaking into a high security lab that my dad works in, risking our safety, his job, our home, because:vegan".
"Man sure is terrible there are animals in this lab. But let me open this crate clearly housing an animal equal to me in size, that's made of steel and specifically locked away, because I need a picture".
I could go on but it decisions that no one would make given their circumstances and assumed level of intelligence. The story would have made more sense if they showed the director giving stage directions. At least then you could say "oh she did that because that man with the megaphone told her to do that"
Bangbeob (2020)
Excellent show
NO SPOILERS. It's wonderful to see a supernatural K drama that is dark and serious. Especially when a lot of the shows ruin suspension of disbelief by minimizing the police (kidnap victim is located so they send like 2 detectives instead of showing up in force, that type of thing). Even often used scenes like "crooked executive gets interrogated by police without enough evidence" had a cunning and chess like edge to them. The characters are multidimensional and grow. It's a great show all around.
The Old Ways (2020)
Turns out the real demon was the drugs we made along the wat
I'll say it had some potential. Fresh setting. Coolish demon. But awful characters. They ham fisted a heroin addiction as some sort of two sentence personal growth. "Bad city girl does drugs. Stops doing drugs." The plot barely made sense. I didn't care what happened to anyone. Suddenly she's a god killing medicine woman 20 minutes after coming off a bender. Apparently demons can be very easily finish with face paint and a mortal combat finisher from a sober junky. Pass.
