Manhattan Mistress (1981)
Sweet Potatoes
The best "snappy dialog" in the movie is the kitchen scene where Ernie announces "your tits are like sweet potatoes". Boy would I like to meet the person that came up with that line.
I have to admit that Juliet Anderson and Erica Boyer do make the movie. The scene at the bar where Angel fantasizes about the 3-way makes me wish that I was the one in that 3-way.
If you like cheesy dialog then I recommend this movie.
I have always said that the cushiest job in the world is a dialog coach for porn movies.
I mean how hard do you have to work to get the actors to moan and groan. Is there a special way it has to be done?
Police Squad! (1982)
Why there were only 6 shows.
One night I was listening to talk radio and they had Leslie Nielsen on the program. He went on to explain why there were only 6 shows. '
With TV shows like MASH you could go to the fridge to get a beer and as long as you heard what was going on you didn't miss anything. But with Police Squad, you HAD to watch the show, with the sight gags you missed a whole lot if you didn't see them. Who could forget "... the part of town known as "Little Italy"..." with the coliseum in the background.
Even the movies relied heavily on the sight gags, but then again being in the theater you were a captive audience.
Leslie also said the one reason the show, movies and other movies like Airplane were funny is because they didn't attempt to tell what was funny. It was up to the viewer to get the jokes.
Well that's just my 2 cents.
Christmas Lilies of the Field (1979)
Imitation is NOT the best form of flattery in this case.
While I enjoyed this film, I feel that there were a couple of problems with it.
The first is that it was shot in color. Having seen the original Lilies of the Field in black & white, there was a certain "feeling" about seeing it in b/w, and somehow seeing the sequel in color just didn't do it for me.
The second is with the role of Homer Smith. While I had no problem with Billy Dee Williams playing the role, I have a big problem with him mimicking the voice inflections, hand motions, and movments of Sidney Poitier. I felt that it was too contrived.
Sidney Poitier was the perfect actor in the original Lillies of the Field back in '63, he has certain mannerisms and vocal inflections that make him who he is.
Mama's Family (1983)
But MAMAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I mean, WHO could ever forget the way Vinton would say "but Mamaaaaaaaaa." It's hard to picture this as being the same Ken Berry that appeared in Mayberry RFD and was also an accompolished dancer. He sure played the part very well.
And Iola, I'm sure we all know someone like her. Besides taking care of her mother and making hokey crafts (shades of Martha Stweart) what DID she do?
I'm only sorry they got rid of Sonya. She was the main reason I watched the show.
